It is probably the most insane/fun car event around. All the people there are nuts, and the cars are the s#it. Nothing is as it seems. Everything has nitrous, a turbo, both, twin engines, you name it. The year I ran I was racing against every tuner known to man, and the top 10 cars all had over 600hp (in fact it went well into the top 15 ;-)) and were all on the covers of magazines. TNT's King Snake Turbo Viper, Lingenfelter's TT650, Hennessey's 650R, RENNTech's 7.4 Liter, BECK's Lister Replica (600hp in 1800 lbs!!), Mallett's supercharged vette, SuperPerformance's Cobras, Dinan's Supercharged M3, etc.
The biggest thing if you want to run is to PREP THE DAMN CAR. You don't want to have to touch anything (you will be too tired). I mean, nothing. It has to be able to drive the distance legs, show up and be beat on, and on and on. No fried brakes, no changing plugs, no alignment changes, nothing. We checked the oil once and adjusted the swaybar a number of times (5 mins). Everything else was done before the event. Brakes, wheel bearings, radiator hoses, alignment, etc. We counted 6 motor swaps at the event (typically missed an event).
Otherwise, you want to pack your bags in a color-coordinated system, you will be packing and unpacking the car more times than you can count, and you will rather be asleep. You want like "this is the bag I want when I actually get to a hotel" and "this is the bag that we only open if something breaks" and "this is the bag that has all of my race clothing and timing equipment in it"
A few other things, you NEED a Valentine One Radar detector. You want a cell phone. Super 8 motels are the best (cheapest and pleantyfull) places to stay (for 4 hours at a stint!). PLAN YOUR OWN ROUTE, the route they give out is the bannana in the tailpipe trick!!! They give it to all the HP and police along the way, so all the newbies are hauling ass getting nailed on the main route, and all the veterans are off on their own routes hauling ass. Try and average 100mph on the inbetween legs. Don't stop for food or gas, stop only for BOTH. Pack lightly. Don't focus on power in whatever you bring, focus on RELIABILITY, then everything else.
At the start of the event, as part of the entry package, they give out a deck of cards with the Highway Patrol Cars of the 50 States, a photo guide. How cool is that.
If anyone wants to run it, I can fill you in on the complete details. It's a great event.
