Has anyone considered running One Lap in a SyTy? There is a Lightning that could use some competition.

My question is, why is there a Lightning in the SUV class??

Dude that's no joke

Dude that's no joke

The SUV class has some of the toughest competition there. There were trucks there competing for TTOD against the Hennessey viper and Lingenfelter vette. Nothing there is as it seems, all the entrants are nuts. My friend won the SUV class a few years back in a Typhoon, but there's no way that you'd be anywhere close to winning it (the SUV class) anymore in anything other than a sy from hell setup for road coarses. It's nuts! If you break anything you are done, you don't have any time to fix stuff and get back into the fight without missing something.

It's also the coolest event I have ever run, and I highly recommend running it, just for the hell of it. It's great and the people are cool.

Check it out:

Check it out:

You can read up on the One Lap at www.onelapofamerica.com

It is probably the most insane/fun car event around. All the people there are nuts, and the cars are the s#it. Nothing is as it seems. Everything has nitrous, a turbo, both, twin engines, you name it. The year I ran I was racing against every tuner known to man, and the top 10 cars all had over 600hp (in fact it went well into the top 15 ;-)) and were all on the covers of magazines. TNT's King Snake Turbo Viper, Lingenfelter's TT650, Hennessey's 650R, RENNTech's 7.4 Liter, BECK's Lister Replica (600hp in 1800 lbs!!), Mallett's supercharged vette, SuperPerformance's Cobras, Dinan's Supercharged M3, etc.

The biggest thing if you want to run is to PREP THE DAMN CAR. You don't want to have to touch anything (you will be too tired). I mean, nothing. It has to be able to drive the distance legs, show up and be beat on, and on and on. No fried brakes, no changing plugs, no alignment changes, nothing. We checked the oil once and adjusted the swaybar a number of times (5 mins). Everything else was done before the event. Brakes, wheel bearings, radiator hoses, alignment, etc. We counted 6 motor swaps at the event (typically missed an event).

Otherwise, you want to pack your bags in a color-coordinated system, you will be packing and unpacking the car more times than you can count, and you will rather be asleep. You want like "this is the bag I want when I actually get to a hotel" and "this is the bag that we only open if something breaks" and "this is the bag that has all of my race clothing and timing equipment in it"

A few other things, you NEED a Valentine One Radar detector. You want a cell phone. Super 8 motels are the best (cheapest and pleantyfull) places to stay (for 4 hours at a stint!). PLAN YOUR OWN ROUTE, the route they give out is the bannana in the tailpipe trick!!! They give it to all the HP and police along the way, so all the newbies are hauling ass getting nailed on the main route, and all the veterans are off on their own routes hauling ass. Try and average 100mph on the inbetween legs. Don't stop for food or gas, stop only for BOTH. Pack lightly. Don't focus on power in whatever you bring, focus on RELIABILITY, then everything else.

At the start of the event, as part of the entry package, they give out a deck of cards with the Highway Patrol Cars of the 50 States, a photo guide. How cool is that.

If anyone wants to run it, I can fill you in on the complete details. It's a great event.

Irid,
What year did you run?
I have run this event for 2 years now '00,'01,and we leave again in a week! You are right in your plea for car preperation. You have very little time to sleep, and car maintence would cut into your sleep time. We run in the GT2 class, and would like to run in SUV next year with my Ty.
The GT2 class is one of the bigger classes and we will have a hard time advancing past our current level. We were 14th in class in '00, 6th in class last year.
If I could get a Typhoon to run like my Firebird, we could have won SUV last year.
The fee is $2100 this year and we offset the cost by having local business sponsor the car. I also run the same car in local SCCA Solo1 (hillclimbs) and Solo2 (autocross events). The local events help sell sponsorship.
There is no logical reason to do this. But there are 125 cars entered this year.
You can see updates during May3-11 at www.onelapofamerica.com
We have no car # yet, but I am Scott Breneman, and my co-driver is Dave Groff.
Wish us luck!!
Scott

..

..

I ran it in 2000. We were supposed to be running a GT2 car this year, but we didn't finish it in time. Next year ;-) I ran the black 928 in GT1. It weighs 3250 and made 290/315 on the ground, so we were very happy with 23rd overall (once we got the thing sorted we started to finish in the mid teens at events. having never set foot on any of them I was quite happy) We drove 10k miles in 12 days ;-) I sold the 928 two months ago, otherwise we would have just taken that thing again as backup. Sorry for the long range shot, but it's the only one on the web I think:

Irid,
I remeber your car, we stayed at the same hotel on the first night, near Gingerman. That car sounded Awsome!! The red BMW 2002, and the White Supercharged Ranger were also there.
I was running a "mystic teal"(green) '95 Z-28 with Yellow sponsor graphics.
Was '96 the only year for the Typhoon?

We are building a firehawk for this right now. Unfourtanetly we did not get it done in time for the event. I also want to take my syclone in this event in the next couple of years should be a lot fun. I have already raced on most of the tracks that this event runs on so it should be a blast.

Yeh it did sound cool..

Yeh it did sound cool..

I really liked running on the high banks at MIS. It sounded bad-a$$ reflecting off the wall inside the car, and my co driver just said it was wicked out on the banking echoing all over the place. I don't think that we went through a day without someone coming up and saying it sounded killer. It was fun to wind that sucker out ;-)

Yeah I remember you guys (and that hotel). Good luck this year! Damn I wish I could be there, grrrr...

It could be fun to take a number of Sy/Ty's one year, that'd be cool. Besides, that way we can carry some alternating spare parts for the things ;-) We'd have to get a photo in C&D all lined up like that.

Al,
You may want to talk to Danny Corcoran about his '95 Firehawk, if that's the way you are going. He's benn doing this event for a while and is a good reference. He was verry helpful with advice both years we ran. I'll talk to you when about my Ty when I get back.
