Cant reach 20psi (FIXED)

I cant reach 20psi:

I adjusted my waste gate
New boost solenoid
New cap, rotor, wires, plugs
New TB gasket and plenum gasket
Runing alky
No vacuum leaks
Datamaster says nothing.

The only thing I can think of is my wastegate is stuck or not closing all the way. Is there a way to fix this without removing the turbo and really trearing into it. I thought maybe the canister was stuck. What is a good way to get the waste gate unstuck if thats the case?

Pull the pressure line to the canister. Boost should go to the moon.

If it doesn't, you have:

A leak *somewhere* before the turbo.
A defective turbo
A leaky flapper puck
A restricted/plugged exhaust.
Excessively rich fuel mixture.

Anyone ever remove the actuator and rod and clean it up? Would that work in my case? Try and spray some lube up in the actuator?

Actuator(Canister) is very rarely a problem, unless you have a leak... but that would result in higher boost, not lower.

The WG arm is another story... that siezes open/shut quite frequently.
Only things you can really lube it with is refinery lube (nickel) or GM heat riser lube.

You can get the flapper out if necessary, but you gotta grind the weld off, and knock it
through with a punch. Then weld the arm back on once you're done cleaning the shaft bore out.

I've done it enough times on mine that the arm is starting to get thin from being ground down...

Re: Cant reach 20psi

Wow my Sy is bombed. I was up until 3:30am last nigt and up again this morning fighting with this thing. Here is what I did.

*Pulled all the plugs (Looked good)
*Checked all the plug wires (good)
*Sprayed carb cleaner to find leaks (no leaks)
*Re-did all the intercooler piping and hose couplers (I know that they are tight because I use T-bolt clamps)
*No holes in the intercooler house couplers.
*Intercooler pump is working good.
*Took the wategate actuator off and cleaned/checked it (good)
*Checked the wastegate flapper (it moves very easily)
*Having problems with stumbling RPMs
*Pulled the vacuum on the wastegate actuator. (Still only 8 to 10 psi max)
*Building boost is progressively getting harder and harder to do.
*I think fuel is getting dumped really bad. Exhaust temps are really hot under small amounts of boost at WOT. No KR
*Datamaster says nothing again.

My only theory’s:
1. Spun the shaft between the compressor and exhaust side of the turbo.
2. New O2 sensor that I put in 2 months ago is not the right one and messing up fuel.
3. Need new ignition.
4. Some thing electrical is really, really Fed up.

Open for suggestions or even help.

pull the feed line to the canister see what happens

Are you running the stock 2 bar MAP or the upgrade 3 bar? You will only be able to get 13 psi with the 2 bar with the MAP enabled.

I have a 3 bar. Its ran fine this way for a long time. Something has let go.

Check you lower intake for a leak...may see some oil residue. My idle was a bit rough but when I put a new gasket and silicone she purred like a kitten.

I replaced the upper intake gasket and sparyed carb cleaner around for leaks.

I tried a TON of things. Im just as consfused as you are.

Re: Cant reach 20psi

If you still have a CAT, it may be busted up inside (clogged). Mine let go about a week before I did my turbo swap. Truck ran rough and I couldn't get much over 12 psi no matter what I did. Once I pulled it off, it was COMPLETELY plugged up. Hard to believe that the truck could even run with it like that.

Also, how does the compressor wheel on your turbo look? Remove the elbow and use a mirror to check it out. If you still have the plastic crossover pipe on your truck, it may have busted and taken out some of the fins in the process. The number of people who have lost turbos due to it breaking has been going up as these trucks keep getting older...

Re: Cant reach 20psi

I have no cat and I have no crossover pipe for a intake. I will have to check for shaft play. It did not have any when I bought the truck.

Re: Cant reach 20psi

Not really sure how my neighbor and I fixed it but its a raped ape now. We just fine combed the engine and just cleaned, pulled and checked a tone of things. We shot compressed air into the wastegate actutor and I think thats what did it. I then adjusted the waste gate and it started working again. FINALLY! I also out the stock fuel regulator back in. It idles much better now. The adjustable regulator must have been bad. I took it out last night and I could not beleive how fast it was. I will post a 0-100 vid up soon.

Re: Cant reach 20psi (FIXED)

I bet the WG puck got stuck open, happened to me on the way to nats in '99. Took forever to find.

Once you put air in canistor WG opened up, unstuck and away you went. Just be warned it may happen again.

Re: Cant reach 20psi (FIXED)

I took the waste gate canister totally off and I was able to move the wastegate flapper freely with one finger. Im thinking the actuator was all gummy. Thats why I say Im not really sure what fixed it but I think it had something to do with it.
