50/50 WATER ALKY OK IN smc kit? I put the 220uF cap after the fuse on the feed before the relay. OK? Wouldn't ti drain the battery? What pump speed do you all run at w/ which mixes? I break up over 4 on straight alky turning on at 11 psi w/stock boost levels.

I like 100 percent denatured alky, but mixing it with water works too.

The cap passes alternating current to ground, Direct current is "blocked" so it will not drain your battery.

I had to have Steve send me a smaller jet. He sends out a "15" with the kit, but my truck works better with the "10" and allows me to run the pump speed up to about 3/4.

When your truck "breaks up" on too much alky, does your scan tool register gobs of knock?

Take care,
Daron

yup, lots o'knock but the plugs said otherwise. I rewired for the relay yesterday but couldn't finish b-4 work so I just put in the polarized cap and split. Though I finished the wiring this morning, the capacitor was all I needed to kill false knock. I was also breaking up at anything over 3 pump speed on 100% so I and mixed some 50/50 alky and water and the truck couldn't get eneough of it, pulling hard on 10pump turning on at 11psi. Figuring it could take more alky I just filled it w/ 70/30 mix and I'm going to the track in a hour. Watching the atomization rates w/ the IC off was informative and a post on turbobuicks listed pump psi at wich setting and that was great too. Will be back tonight w/ plety o'DM files. With the new super eliminator at my track for 7.99 1/8mi and under, so there's few below 8.8 but me. Feels much quicker now and I'm running healthy advance under 15lbs w/ IAT dropping fast. Looking for the big trophy tonight.

Damn track closed b/c of threat of rain. Oh,well we run again in 2 weeks.
Daron -runs great on 70/30 but like 100% it begins to break up higer in rpm in the taller gears. On full alky it'd stutter a bit in 2nd then again above 3500 in 3rd but on the mix there's no shudder until 3500+ in 3rd, but now the DM doesn't doesn't show anything I can see. I'll send you a file but the ecm/prom I had in yesterday wasn't mine and had the first boost flag enabled unlike mine, though mines stock as well. Maybe I'll try the 10 jet too, but I've been calling SMC for a few days w/ no response and heard on turbo buicks.com that Steve from SMC was in a serious head on collision with an elderly driver on the street. Hope all's ok w/him and his family. Oh yeah- my pump speed on this run was 9 at start and I dialed it back to 5 after the stutter started. On a side note it was leaving the track going up a big hill and running against a '01 lightning that always runs consistent 12.8 -12.94 at the track in 1/4. He got me 2 cars on launch b/c I had no boost and the limit was enabled but unbelievably I walked away from him up the hill by like 12 feet per second. Hot damn! I just left a 12 second car! Watch out folks!

Eww.. I hadnt heard Steve was in an accident, that is terrible if so.

If you are bogging a bit with the full denatured, try gapping your plugs at .030 if you havent done so already. Some folks swear by Isopropal Alcohol, as it you can get it with either 10 or 30 (or there abouts) percent water content.
The new size 10 jet made all the world of difference for me, hopefully you can get a hold of one.

My email is Bullyhart@aol.com
Take care,

Re: Daron would know this-Alky tuning

Well, good news from Steve of SMC. I talked to him last night and he sounds good. Says his foot needs some work but otherwise the accident isn't holding him back from much.

He mentioned he will likely provide the size 10 jet to future Sy/Ty owners that purchase the SMC alky kit as well as suggest in the instructions that folks try a .030 plug gap for starters. Nice guy he is, glad he is well.

Gapped all plugs to .030yesterday as well as fixed a cross threaded #4 plug hole I didn'teven know about- I had blow by as well as fuel deposits from the plug not entering the combustion chamber completely. Pulls good but I still see some bogging towards the top off 3rd and beyond. I've ot the cap., relay and now the plugs are .030. All I can do is get a size 10 jet, huh? Or just turn up the boost w/ a 3bar, etc. The plugs looked great, I thought, just a nice golden brown, right on the lean side of perfect.
So does anybody know how to remove JB weld? I'm contemplating just leaving the 15 jet in there and adding the 10 next to it after plugging the 15. May need more alky later w/more boost.

Jeremy - what's your pump speed set to, turn-on point etc? Are you running straight denatured or a mix? Don't know if you saw my other post but I won't be needing the SMC for a while...MAJOR mods on the way  Those POS stock heads will be outta there ASAP.

I haven't settled on a good pump speed- between 8 and 10 so far. Turn on point is just under 12psi, but that's so I can run the alky longer before it starts to flood. IMO it's about the perfect turn on point for stock boost trucks. You can move pretty quickly through traffic and around town w/o running alky but the moment you put your foot down it's on. Curretnly running 70%alky 30% distilled water, but I figure I'll switch to 100%alky after my #10 jet shows up(I'm calling steve today). I mentioned to you in an e-mail that fuel pressure is directly related to how much alky I can run now, though it may change(reciting for others). You didn't blow yours up did you? If not it's official, you spent more than me in the last 8mos(I did get a tranny and Al's front end,and much more, though).Spend on, brother. Those baer brakes are SIC!

No, nothing blew up :D Just not impressed with the SMC kit...yet. It's really just a band-aid and that's why I'm scrapping those shitty "fast-burn" stock heads. I will continue to invest time and money until this SOB stops knocking :x Daron sent me an e-mail with instructions on how to do the wiring fix and I also want to try a tighter gap.

I have to wait for the 18" rims to arrive from Germany before I can put the Baer's on  Yes, I will have spent about 13K just in mods which is what I paid for the truck but the total investment will still be less than the truck originally cost ($30K). I know 'cause I have the original window sticker, brochures, etc. I got from the 1st owner. I'm the second owner and the truck only has 53K miles.

forward me that stuff from Daron, would you? Remember that alky itself is only a safety type mod, and it's true benefits are aparent once you turn up the boost. I'm in dire need on a #10 jet before next friday's track session. I've been messing woth this too long and don't want to lag to much in the points standings. E-mail or call me tonight w/the status of yours- I've been unable to reach Steve at SMC.

.

Alky is considered a "Band Aid" if you use it incorrectly. Calling it a band aide for knock, is like calling Nitrous a band aid for lack of horsepower. Use Alky for its intended purpose and you can rid yourself of your race gas dependence, run the same tune on the street as you do at the strip and benifit from its ability to prevent knock. Try the Capacitor, and narrow your gaps and see how you like it...
Take care,
Daron

I installed the capacitor as instructed and now my tach no longer flutters. Thanks a bunch guys :D Still waiting for the smaller nozzle to arrive.

I'd like to start this post with "Daron You Da Monsta". I installed the cap on the feed wire and it eliminated all false knock  . I used to run T2 18 with about 4-6 degs of knock (obviously false knock) I replaced the pump in the smc (don't leave methanol in the bottle  ) and added the cap and I'm now safely running T3 18 :p :p with 3-4 NR max. By the way did I mention T3 18 is on pump gas!!! So those of you that think alky is a band aid, me and my "smc band aid" are waiting for you and your truck with the boo boo at the next traffic light!

Hey al- are you running the size 15 jet or did you have to swap in a #10? Even w/o false knock(congratulations) do you stumble after a while on the spray like the rest of us?

I'm still using the nozzle it came with and I have it set at max pump speed. I not sure if going to a smaller nozzle will help since I've maxed out the pump speed.

If you're interested, this was cut from a quote regarding his kit by Steve at SMC-

Here's a mod for the SMC kit to increase pump pressure quite a bit.
1: Remove cover from in car speed control.
2: See the little grey box?
3: Turn blue adjuster on grey box fully clockwise.
4: Now replace in-line 10 amp fuse with a 20 amp one.
That's it!

Did you guys wire up a seperate relay for the SMC as well? I know Daron did this for some reason but I only did the capacitor. Why is this necessary, if at all? BTW, I have not done a Datamaster run since install the cap so maybe I was getting some false knock too :D
