When I did the gilbert last time I did not change the seal. Now my truck is apart I decited to change it. Ok. thats not the stupid part. I removed the nut and flange...ok here it comes....and I did not mark the nut and count the treads for pinion backlash. How do I fix this. Thanks.

Re: did something stupid. help

Hrrrmmm.... There is a specified torque in the service manual, I want to say 35 ft lbs but I cannot remember for sure what it was. I did mine that way and it hasn't given me any trouble

Re: did something stupid. help

they are usually only like 2-3 threads down, i would just run the nut down till it bottoms out (tap the flange on till its down as far as you can get it) then just give it one good whack with the impact. its not stupid...I do it at work all the time...no biggie and put some teflon sealant on the splines ive seen the leak through them too.

Re: did something stupid. help

I haven't checked the 7.2 IFS, but on the 12 bolt and 8.5 10 bolt I torque the nut to 150 foot pounds. I have tested it and it takes about 200 foot pounds of torque to change the bearing preload on these rear ends, but I don't know if it would be the same on the 7.2. Be sure to use some Loktite on the threads.
