Diff replacement

does anyone think its possible to change out the acuaul differential without taking out the entire case? That top bolt in the frame is such a bastard! I cant get it out and get a hold on the nut. I cracked open the new diff (off 4x4 s series w/ 3.42s) and it looks like I can swap the diff without removing the case.

Re: Diff replacement

It will come out...All you need is a swivel right after the socket. The diff wont come out without removing the whole thing....trust me I tried.

Re: Diff replacement

I picked it up at a salvcage yard up the road. Came off a 4X4 blazer with 3.42s. I got it for $200. Theres another real big place in seguin called greenleaf recycling that will give you a 6(?) month warranty and extended warranty options. They had one for $350 I think.
Edit: this is the one I was talking about:

Re: Diff replacement

You can not change the differential without removing the case. This is a real pain to set up with the case out, and it would be impossible to set the backlash on the gears with it in the truck.

Re: Diff replacement

I just did it, with a 18mm box end in the frame on the nut, and a 3 inch extension and a deep 3/4 socket on the bolt. I could only ratchet it one 'click' at a time. I took breaks and worked on the other bolts to rest my wrist. But I got'er done.

Re: Diff replacement

I used the 18mm and an impact swivel and had the diff out in no time at all. I used a cutoff wheel for the bottom bracket. And the diff about fell out....

Re: Diff replacement

Is it a good idea to run Synthetic in the front diff? If so what is the best to use?
