Emissions Test

It is Tag time for the Typhoon. Friday after work I drove the truck to the inspection center. It has only been driven about 1000 miles or so since I did a tuneup so I thought it would pass with no problem. Well it failed hc reading was 288 and the limit is 220. On Sunday I went over the vaccum hoses to make sure none had slipped off. They were all ok, It has all new hoses. The fuel pressure was a little high so I corrected that. I went for another inspection today. I took the truck for a little drive on the way to make sure it was good and warmed up. Well this time the hc reading was 910. :shocked!: I thought no way. So I pulled the Typhoon across the street, unplugged the tan wire that is disconnected to set the timing. Then I went right back to the inspection center. I made sure to get tested in one of the other bays and the hc reading was 121. I could not believe it. Could it make that much difference. I thing there testing machines are just wack.

Re: Emissions Test

Timing is set at 0. Fuel pressure is 43lb. I have a wideband o2 senser with gauge and all the time it runs around 14.7.

Re: Emissions Test

Some of those machines sample at a random time. Depending what time it takes the snapshot you can get wild readings.

Re: Emissions Test

Why not just turn the fuel pressure down just before the test?

MN had emission testing years ago. I used to pull into the gas station next door,
turn the fuel pressure down to 30-32 psi, (or something pretty low),
then dirve into the bay and score real low.

Then go back next door and turn it back to whatever I want.

The last time we had to get tested the technician smiled real nice
and said "runs like it's brand new."
Not exactly.

910 HC????!!! I think the machines that TN uses are crazy! Ive had some POS beater cars pass before that I knew would fail and weve had a truck here at work fail that wasnt even two years old yet with very low miles.

Ive done what TurboTroy is talking about. Pull in the parking lot and turn the FP waaaay down, run it through and turn it back up. Thats the only way the Syclone would pass the time before I replaced the vaccum lines.

Re: Emissions Test

Not to ask a dumb question (or hijack this thread) but, How do you turn down the fuel pressure? (How to and location)

Ya, it's got a Turbo
Re: Emissions Test

You need an AFPR (adjustable fuel pressure reuglator). Located on your fuel rail.

Stab it and steer it
Re: Emissions Test

Even though you "warmed it up" make sure the shop does (or in this case did they?) do the 3 min 2500 RPM run to make sure the cat was fired off before the test. Also just FYI try to get the shop to put the machine into manual mode and do a pre-test. It helps if the owner, like the shop I use, owns a Buick GN and understands things.

We dont use "shops" here in TN. We have to go to state owned emissions testing stations.

Re: Emissions Test

Here in Wisconsin we have the state run emissions test centers too. FINALLY, this year as part of a new budget our governor signed into law, all OBD1 cars are no longer emission dyno tested!!! I have been waiting all my life (OK ever since I got into hot rodding) for this.

Although I have to say, it was worth a "truckful of laughs" when I pulled into the "Constant 4WD Vehicle" dyno lane and they would come out and point me over into the 2WD dyno and argue with me about my own truck!! :rotf:

I could be wrong (sometimes I mixed up trucks), but I thought your Ty had an AFPR.

Re: Emissions Test

I don't have to go to inspection anymore.. collector registration for the win (however I can only drive it 3k miles a year)
