I thought I would give everyone an update in regards to my engine rebuild. My block, old pistons and rods, and new forged pistons are sitting at the machine shop waiting for their turn. The number one cylinder will be sleeved and the the block will be bored .040 over. They thought maybe some time this month for the machine work so I am waiting patiently.
The crank has been turned .010 on both the mains and rods and checks out good. I ordered new main and rod bearings and have them in hand. I want to start ordering other parts that I need so when the block is done I can immediately start the assembly process.
I have a question about harmonic balancers. The one I removed (with the timing mark 18* off) did not have any balance holes drilled in it. I went to Rock Auto's site and they have four choices listed for a 1992 Typhoon. Three of them are symmetrical like the one I removed from my motor. l The fourth one has balance holes drilled in the outer ring. When looking at the back side outer ring with the keyway at 12 o'clock there are extra holes dilled from about 1 o'clock to 4 o'clock. It seems like the one with the extra holes drilled would be the correct one to use since the motor is externally balanced. Does any one have a stock harmonic balancer laying around that they could check for me?
I also need to order piston rings. I talked to Hastings Tech Support and they recommended their moly rings. They said they would work great in a turbo charged application. Since I am building a street motor and will be using the stock turbo I tend to agree with them. Any suggestions other wise?
I know I will have more questions as I go on. Thanks in advance for your help.
