Filter reading

I hope this is not an old topic...tried to search but maybe I´m just too stupid to use the great search function.

So, What should I find / should not find when I cut the oil filter ?
Maybe a link to some pictures ?

I got an oil filter cutter for the job, so I dont think there´s any extra stuff inside.

Quickstop [UK]

Combating adversyty.
Re: Filter reading

You're looking for any obvious metal build up. The cutter is the right thing to use - what brand? - so it doesn't sound like any shrapnel made it in there.

The most obvious pieces are bearing material and they apparently show up as gold flakes. If you have those then you should navoid driving the truck as you'll be wearing your crank out. Any other metal fragments could be indiciative of various states of wear and tear/ failure.

Best bet if you're unsure is to take pics, post them up here, and get an assessment, unless someone you know can identify the issue.

What are you concerned about that made you cut open your filter?

I got a Longacre today. It worked ok IMO.

I did find sand like stuff. Some of it did dissolve into xylene. No metal flakes i n my opinion.

I did this because my Ty has this tapping sound when cold. It is quite loud after strart up. I did an oil change a few days ago and the sound is still there - different but there.

Re: Filter reading

This is how the filter looked alike after I rinsed it with some gas... I didn´t see any debris so i thought maybe I´d separate the goo from the filter...
