Help me build a bullet proof front drivetrain :)

Matt -

What was different about the Ty propshaft? Is it a design difference, or just the thickness of the shaft? I was planning on getting a custom one built by Dynotech.

Also, did you ever figure out WHY the truck had hop like that? Was it the inability of an AWD vehicle to transfer enough weight to the wheels?

I think matt meant to say the output shaft to the rear in the transfer case, not the front propshaft...

As i recall I called matt up after he sold the truck and told him why it hopped off the line.

Rancho shocks in the rear of a syty are to long and on an extremely hard launch they will bottom out which makes the truck bounce.

Notice i told him this after he sold the truck... competition sucks. lol :)

The output shaft from the transfer case to the rear driveshaft? I think I recall the Ty one being thicker, is that correct?

As for the rear shocks, I'm planning on going with a set of QA1's, measured specifically for the height of the truck. Since it's lowered about 3 inches, with stock length shocks, I would run into that bottoming out issue that you mentioned to Matt. :)

Yes the biggest prob with AWD is the weight transfer with high HP vehicles IMHO

Yeah thats right i meant to say output shaft but we did have a problem with the prop shaft too. After we changed the output shaft the prop shaft didnt give us any more problems, like literally twisting them both where they looked like a drill bit!

The shocks we had were changed from rancho to something else (cant remember) that was a lil more stiff so that really wasnt completely the problem. Ed, you're always lookin for an edge! LOL We did figure out a lot about the adjusting the suspension but the one thing that confused us was it wouldnt do it every time. same track same temp no adjustments and it would hop one time and the next it wouldnt. funny thing was that the best runs were on tape and it hopped on every one of em. we had many runs that the truck left fine but just didnt perform ET wise so i didnt post them on the internet.

One thing we did figure out is AWD is DEFINATELY not the answer with 1000+ HP!!!

How tractable is your truck on the street if you're not trying to go for a crazy launch?

I can see how it wouldn't be ideal at the track, but I would tend to think that it would still be the best possible scenario for trying to put down 1000hp on the street with no preparation.

heres how 1000hp on the street with awd works...

go out on the interstate w/ harry to check the shift points on a new governor.

from 50 mph i tried 5 times to gingerly roll into it.
By gingerly i mean less throttle than you would use to pass somebody easily on the highway.

all 5 times it broke the tires crazy loose at about 65-75.

neither of us said a word these 5 attempts.

after the 5th i slowed down to 45 looked at harry and said:

"ya know this would be a lot easier if i wasnt such a pussy!"

Harry just smiled and said take your time, no reason to get hurt doing this.

next pass i just kept pedaling till i could eventually get my foot to the firewall, felt the shift we needed on the datalog and then cruised home.

so your answer about 1000hp on a unprepped street is it that it sucks.

true story!

I am sure their is a lot of pucker factor when breaking AWD at 70mph, to me AWD spinning seems a lot scarier than when I did it in 2wd.

One thing that is crazy is thinking about the 700rwhp, 800rwhp, 1000rwhp, etc 2wd vehicle that I read about being street driven. If you easily spinning 65-70 mph, what are they doing?

I can tell you after riding in Roberts truck when it was at nats and we drove it back to the hotel, 60mph roll onto the gas was wild. Inside the truck I didn't realize it, but outside i heard we left 4 black marks as we changed lanes. Not sure if Robert planned to change lanes or not now that I think about it.

Strangers did look at us funny after also. But I get that all the time just walking.

Now had I been in the drivers seat, instead of sitting on a pillow in the pass side it might have been a bit more scary. Robert did offer to let me drive, but I kindly refused in favor of riding. I did get to drive it on and off the trailer a few times, and into the shipping company. Of course it had some safety factors installed and power output was less than a stocker. :)

Usually with the right ramp rate on the boost controller and a good set of drag radials you can hook a 1000rwhp car at 65+mph.

Haha! Being a part of the F-Body/SyTy club is damn expensive isn't it? I don't even have half the stuff you do and these things still break the bank. :(

Nope, I've had the roller posted for sale on ls1tech for the past few weeks. I've owned the car for 9 years but it's time for something new.

IMHO the only way to get 1000 HP on the ground without being at a track is to have your boost control set where every stage is at least a sec with the 1st stage being about 10-12 lbs and gradually increasing as you go. We never went full throttle on the street with high boost bc we knew it was a waste of time. we just went to the track. Safety DEF plays a role in answering ur question. Having ET streets on the front and slicks on the back does help though!

So the times you did play around on the street on lower boost, if you had tirespin was it fairly driveable or were you flying across 3 lanes with smoke rolling off the tires? :)
