HID color

I've had an SPW Industries 7000k H4 Hi/Lo kit installed in Hella Euro H4 housings for a while now. Anybody know what exactly determines the "color in the light spectrum" we actually see from the bulbs? Mine look blue. Tired of seeing blue. What I gotta do/change to make 'em look more "white"? TIA.

you have to lower the K a lttle. We sell the kits at my shop. Most are made to look like the benz or bmw kits, really blue.
Thanks, Matthew 92ty 0194

and what others and myself wrote.
Good white color is in a range between 4200 and 5000 K, all higher Kelvin ratings will be blueish, everything above 6500 K is getting into purple.
It depends also a little bit on your headlights, I've seen some guys retro-fitting projection lenses into our H4 style headlights...

helfman, Good info. there...an encyclopedia's worth

I thought I'd be able to, maybe, add a capacitor, diode, electrode, or whatever in-line with the wire(s) going to the plug for the HID capsule.

Or change the HID capsule to a different *k range*(thinking there were capsules with different ranges).

I was hoping that either of the above would make it more *yellowish white"

Man, I don't wanna buy another kit. Maybe down the road.

Ya know, I'm so glad I got the HID's...and I thought just Hella H4 Halogen capsules were *bright*. The H4's were better than sealed beams. But NOW, I can really see what's ahead...WAAAY ahead.

Gentlemen, I appreciate the replies. Thanks. Any more? :D

Helfmann, Can ya elaborate on the retrofition of projectedness unto the H4 houses?

Any pics of it?

@lavaman and all

Some additional stuff, not that I recommend to go with US spec'd lights (see my other posts "distributing light in a 30° angle....".
A comment from an other board
"I have the E-spec glass headlights paired w/
HIDs..will NEVER go back to stock. Never get high
beamed. Be sure to obtain the glass headlights for
left hand drive cars...those that blind others to your
left are for right hand drive cars."

If you want to know more about the differences in DOT and ECE (or e-spec) lights read this article, explaining it very good and simple http://www.jag-lovers.org/books/xj-s/26-Lightmods.html

Wanna know more, check
http://dmses.dot.gov/docimages/pdf82/176157_web.pdf
... he did the math!

OK enough blurb, time for entertaining, some are better as me with the DigiCam http://www.houseofthud.com/cartech/hids/hids-final.html

What I said before, I can get e-spec Hella's we just must get enough people together that it gets worth to order.

If you are looking to buy projector lights, the cheapest projector headlights suitable for an HID conversion and not raising the issues of cutting glass and mirror of original H4's can be found at
http://www.altezzawarehouse.com/cgi-bin/altezzawarehouse/process.html
If this link ain't work, go to the front-page and look for "projection headlights" for a 92 Blazer (remember from above... these are DOT not ECE lights).

Upgrading the capsule itself...sure you can buy just a new capsule... check for sources via google "HID-Bulbs". Most of them are only offered as an upgrade/ trade in, they are rather expensive
or check http://www.brightheadlights-hid.com/hid_lights_3.htm

Another source for you could be
http://www.hidkits.com/whats_new_10m.htm, there you find also a good chart explaining the color temps. I am not sure HOW they want to come down with the color temp if you capsule is not designed for .. let's say 4500 K ... but it's worth to call or contact them by email. I am also not aware if "dialing in the ballast" may damage this part ... do some research and post the outcome - LOL

Ups turned out loooong again ... sorry!

Matthias my man- what is up.........

All-Check it......I have an 8000k kit on my '01 Tahoe.....I was very happy with the HID's in the stock headlamp assembly. Lighting was crazy bright with the color I like.

I recently bought a set of projector beam assemblies and I'm not really happy......first I had to modify the assembly to make the stock size bulb fit (this is unrealted to sy/ty land but a note anyways).....second the brightness is probably 1/3 or 1/4 the intensity now and the color is a little different shooting through the projection beam.
The benefits are 1) Standing outside the truck looking at the lights makes me want to go hump the truck- they look tight 2) You do get a longer projection with the beams, but with the loss of the brightness closer up
3) I don't blind people and run them off the freeway anymore

So my advise is to be carefull with the projection beam assemblies unless you're willing to make some trade-offs.

He Dude (I am talking about Brian).
What's up down South the airport.
I ran into GuyL yesterday, so it's the old SyTy timers week I guess. Drop me an email at tyguy@tyguy.net what's cookin'.

Had not much time lately and thanks for your additions. I don't like the projectors anyway but that's my personal opinion and you should see my Ty with the ECE Hella headlights and HID - LOL.

Gimme a call when you have time (lotsa news)

Helfmann,
How many people do you think it would take to get a gp for the euro spec hella's? I have bought a set and am pretty sure they are the euro spec, the box is written in german I think, it has a city bulb in it and I am not positve but I think it looks like yours. I would be interested in buying 2 sets if the price is right. I really wish I would have had more money at the time and bought a few more sets as it was at a local swap meet but I did not realize at the time they were different than the regular hella's.
Also could you possibly give me some more info on your hid headlights? I saw your other post but I have not really been able to find them for sale, you recommend the catz brand? Thanks and feel free to email me the info.

Check google

or

or

or

There are hundreds of sources, buy where you trust the guys.
Use the search button, type HID and read what others and myself wrote. We should not stretch it too much... .

Additional questions? Your welcome to email me at tyguy@tyguy.net

Regarding a GP... a German friend is running a wholesale shop in SoCal and he ships containers of parts, so shipping costs of original Hella's is getting affordable. Lead time could be a little bit longer but ... anybody KNOWING if the ECE spec lights "for off road use" at JCWhitney are the same as originals? Some posts say use some say no, some say check quality - I would order some but have already my spare set...
