Hot 1997 Z28

I was at a new local attraction in Spokane, ammatuer races at Spokane Raceway Park. For five dollars you can race all night on Fridays. Every rice burner and every real hot rod for a hundred miles show up to show their stuff. After severely roasting a late 80's IROC on the quarter mile track with my 93 Typhoon (bone stock), I took on a 97 Z28 owned and modified by a local machinist who indicated he had only been "doing a little tinkering" with the car over the Winter. I asked what kind of times his car was putting down in the quarter, and he only replied that these cars run 14.6s from the factory (loose leg). While we were chatting while waiting in line to race, it was becoming apparent this guy knew a hell of a lot about performance cars, engines and racing. As we approached the start line and he's burning bleach off his tires like Big Daddy Don, I had that odd feel like I was about to be sandbagged. Nonetheless, I perservered and built boost on the line as described on this web site ( I don't have much experience with racing, so I rely heavily on what I read here). The start girl dropped her arms and I got a pretty good start and was probably ahead by 7 car lengths at the 1/8th mile mark when he started to reel me in. By the time we hit the quarter, we were door handle to door handle - photo finish. As I suspected, the machinist admitted in a brief post window-to-window chat that he had gone through the engine and polished and ported, etc. God knows what else he didn't admit to, but his car sounded and seemed far from stock.

man, what kind of track do you have there? is this illegal street racing? most tracks have a tree, how was yours decorated.(lol) and a 97 z28 will be a bit of a challenge assuming that it does not have a lt4, then it would eat us. stock atleast, that is what you are. it is not that i dont believe you, just sounds weird, perhaps his mods on the z hurt his lowend torque that lt1's are known for. hey, good kill and congrats. welcome to syty.net
i have a few recommendations. 1. read the faq's everywhere on syty websites. you can never get enough, 2. use the cool search function on the top of the BB to search for things that interest you.

It is legal street racing without a light tree or official times. The local police got tired of kids racing in town endangering John Q public, so they put this together as a forum for safer racing. It was a hell of a lot of fun. It felt like I was in American Grafitti. If you don't have such a deal in your community, I would encourage your local constables to propose it to the powers that be.

Rat,

If you could (seeing as how you're such a big proponent) get some numbers to the officials that organize this event? Names and titles would be good things to have as well.

In response to interest to set up legal street racing in other communities, I am furnishing the following names and numbers: Officer Judy Carl, Spokane Police Dept 509-625-4183 and Spokane Raceway Park (Mr. Moe) 509-244-3663. Good luck. If you can pull it off, you'll find it is incredibly popular and a safe way to have fun.

Rat,

Great work. Thanks for the effort. Off the top of your head is there a limit to the cars allowed there? Like nothing below 11 sec QTR miles?

Not that I am aware of, but the Park officials should be able to tell you. I kind of doubt it because they were racing performance motorcycles as well which run well below that figure.

ha, texas motor speed way. it costs like 250 a day to run, and it is just a circle track. there is also navasota racetrack, but it is no better than a country road, that track sucks and they charge too much. as for sealey i have heard good things, i will need to try it. the reason i want legal street racing is for the thrill of somewhat similar street racing feel and the no fee to run.
