??? how do you disassemble sun visors?

I just got a set of 93 Ty visors and I want to get them recovered. But I don't want the upholstery shop to fk them up. I want to disassemble them and reassemble myself. Does anyone have experience with this. Can you walk me through the process? Pictures would also be great.

Ok, From what I understand. They do not come apart. So I pried them apart to see how they where made. Apparently they are like a venous fly trap. It looks like... from the factory, They are opened flat without the rear slider cover, mirror, or mirror outer housing installed.The cloth and the elastic map holder are installed onto the open plastic sun visor. The sun visor has teeth all the way around the visor. The cloth attaches to those teeth and the visor is shut together. The teeth lock together, holding the material tight. Then the rear slider cover, mirror, outter mirror housing, bulbs, and clear bulb lens are installed. Im not 100% on how the visor is held together (glew or clips). But I tried and tried, but could not get it apart. So I ended up taking them to the upholstery shop anyway. Here are some pics before and after I removed the material. This does not look like a $130. job to me. I got the guy down to $95. bucks. Im still not happy. But I know it will look good when it is done.

Does anyone know how to separate the mouth of the sun visors without damaging it?

I always wondered about the visors and what it would take to pull them apart and recover them. I did my headliner, but I never bothered to try the visors because I was unsure what was involved.

The material came off the plastic visor fairly easy. It only took about a minute. There is no glue holding the material to the visor. I think it took me longer to remove the clear plastic lens the first time.

I repaired mine.
I used a small diameter screwdriver (flat blade). I have one for work that is about 4" shaft. Slide out the extension and work the tool into the space between until the extension slides out. Then repeat until the ring comes out, I think. I just monkeyed with it til it popped apart without breaking anything. They have snap keepers that need to be released. Then it snaps back in. :2cents:

I picked up the visors form the upholstery shop today. They said the same thing. I guess I just was not trying hard enough to get them apart.

On another note; My Sy visors only has 1 wire (green). These 93 Ty visors have 2 wires (orange & black). So now what? Do I ground one wire and attach the other to green? or should I remove the headliner, piller, and dash to run new wires from the fuse box?

I ran into the same thing with the ones I found. Orange is batt+, and black I put a spade connector and placed under one of the screw holes next to the body. I guess they had ground issues with the spring, so they ran a wire to the outside of the visor.
