I had a tangle with a yellow Golf Tango last month around midnight... I stopped at the local 24/7 grocery store and park across from it in the parking lot. Get my stuff and while I'm walting in line, a big guy and his GF/wife get in line behind me. I had my "syclone 0-60 in 4.6 seconds... in the rain" t-shirt on and I got the vibe that he was sizing me up. I had a feeling he was the owner of the 'stang and my suspicions were correct when he came out a few moments later. I was feeling a onery and tore after him when he left. Usually the sound of my BOV venting boost into the atmosphere is all it takes to antagonize 'em but, he wasn't willing to play (or so I thought). Disappointed with him in tow, I got into the lane to get on the highway taking the long way home hoping to kill of get killed by something.
Wouldn't you know it soon as I'm about to turn onto the on ramp, he gets by me and revs the hell out of his car and it sounds pretty healthy. I glance over my should and see that it's just him and I on the road. My turn signal goes on letting him know that I'm coming after him now. We get side by side and go from a 30 mph roll first. I HATE rolls ons, unless they are the antiperspirant kind. He gets about two lengths on me before I have 16 psi on tap. Started to slowly walk up on him before we caught up to the traffic that was ahead of us.
I thought for SURE that we would get to run from a light at the light two lights up from where we were at as you ALWAYS catch it the way the lights are timed but, it didn't happen this night. Didn't matter caught the next light instead... I was in the right lane and he was behind me (he fell in behind me to get around a slower car in his lane earlier). So, I pull into the left lane so that he can pull even with me at the light. Picture perfect setup, NO traffic anywhere with a mile of open road ahead of us with just him and I waiting for the green light to drop the hammer in a "run what ya brung" contest.
Soon as I see yellow for the cross traffic, I try to press the brake pedal even further into the floor and start building boost. I hear the 8 cylinders of the 'stang very loudly in my right ear. The light finally goes green and we both just sit there for prolly a full second... Me waiting for him to make the move so that he couldn't say that I left early. So I figure what the hell, I'm going since it's not like he's going to get any other view of my truck other than the back anyways. I'm off and quickly put four lengths between him and me. Ran to almost 100 mph and he never pulled on me. At the next light, he did a u-turn to head back the way we came. Guess he learned that zero to sixity in under five seconds in a pick 'em up truck ain't no hype.
