Leaking Transfer Case

Hey Guy's.

OK, I did some searching here and on the list archives. This is what I have come up with so far.

My transfer case is leaking from between the the 2 halfs. This seems like it might be a common problem. From the list archive, it seems the concensus is to use RTV to seal it up.

What color RTV should I use?

Also, do I need to drop the transfer case to do this?

If I do have to drop the case, How can I tell if there is any damage within the case? (the case does still have fluid)

Anything else I should replace if I have it down?

Last question, is this something an amatuer like myself could do, or should I take it to a mechanic? How expensive might a mechanic be for this?? 1000 bucks??

Thanks,
Chris Zaccagnini

Well, I'll have to check that spot.

Also, the leak is a slow leak. There is a alot of grime under there so I will clean everything up to try to pin point the exact location. Thanks, for the heads up Brian!

I also have a leak, and it is very very slow. I am not sure if it is from the transfer case or the tranny temp sensor in the tranny pan that the P.O. installed in a less than perfect manner. Please keep us posted.
