Re: LED Headlight experiment

LED technology is there, we use them on our fire truck, with no issues. However the only lights that aren't LED is he headlights, only because they don't make the housings we use yet with an LED set up, Im sure it is coming though.

Already did this and its definitely better than HID's in my opinion. I will have to check my email to see exactly what I purchased when I did the upgrade.

I haven't driven the truck a ton since making the change, but so far they haven't had any issues at all even in -10 weather here in Colorado.

do you mean HIDs in a stock type headlight or a proper hid with the right cut off. I have just HID bulbs in a stock replacement housing and truthfully I don't really like it. The hids I have on my f150 is way better then the hid I have on the sy.

Different brand, I checked my email and I used 40 watt Cree LED's. They are extremely white shining on the road and light the way quite well. So far I like them!

anything cheap in LEDS will fail. Spend the money on something nice not entry level. Cheap bulbs and ballast are VERY common.

Re: LED Headlight experiment

I got my hands on a couple pairs of Rigid Industries LED lights, I was considering putting them in the fog light location on the Typhoon. They are a decent brand, they use a larger version on the trucks at work.

OK- update:

The headlights have been in for 10 days. There is good and not so good, of course, but overall I am pleased with the result.

Specs- the replacement housings are polycarbonate, and shave a few pounds off the sealed beam units. Fitment is as easy as replacing standard lamps.

The LED assemblies are 26 watt 1800 lumen hi/lo units. Translation- lower power usage, and about 3x the real world light output of the standard halogen sealed beams. The light is rated at about 5600 on the Kelvin scale, which is about as close to pure white as you can get without getting into the blue tinged crap.

Light install is plug and play- unplug the sealed beams, connect the bulb assemblies to the drivers, and plug the the whole mess into the factory harness. No additional power supply wiring, no drama.

The first photo is a run down the freeway at 70mph. Good clear light output, no blinding of folks ahead of me. There is a hot spot about 30 feet in front of the Ty.

Photos 2 and 3 are low beam/high beam shots about 20' back from a building. The high beams are not fantastic, but are adequate for the job.

So, for very little money, I feel safer driving at night. A worthwhile upgrade until I can find a decent price on the Truck-Lite units.

Re: LED Headlight experiment

Nice update, the lights look pretty good from the pictures. Do you have a link to where you purchased them from and the cost?

Thanks,
Nick

Looks great Pau Hanna! I will get some pictures of mine for comparison and I agree on the much better light output with low power consumption.

I cobbled together parts from a couple of local shops. Total cost under $250 for everything.

Anyway you can give us some more info for people who would like to buy the same setup like myself? I have an older set of H4 replacement housing with regular bulbs and they are not very bright at all. I don't want to run HID's and would like to put something like this together.

Thanks,
Nick

I have new style h4 housings in my truck now with sylvania 9003/h4 zxe bulbs in currently.....truck is sitting in storage but I'll do a side by side comparison of a ddm tuning hid kit for low only with 55 watt bulbs that are 8000k. I'll keep you posted!
