Was out at the NHRA Sport compact event in Pomona today with Sean Morris. Both of us watched as John Lingenfelter drove his 6.99 ET 4 cylinder cavalier straight into the wall going through the traps. The crash was really bad. His condition is still a mystery, but the event ended up being cancelled for what they claim was "lack of daylight". I dont want to jump to any conclusions, but the chances of survival looked slim. The crash looked bad enough, and the car.. well, I can't even explain it.

So far the press reports only say he was taken to a nearby hospital, so we will have to wait and find out the real truth.

I think we should all take a second to pray for John and his family.

My prayers to John and his family, Hopefully he turns out okay. Keep us posted Mike.

 a 6 second calvalier, and at that a 4 cylinder. I didnt know john even messed around with 4 cylinder's.

I was there today too. It looked like the car hit the wall maybe 6-10 times and went all the way down into the sand trap at the end of the runoff area... From my perspective near the tree, it looked like he hit the wall at about a 45 degree angle, and the car sorta "bounced" against it all the way down.

Doh, that sucks. Hope things turn out ok...

Summit had a blurb on his turbo 2.2 Sonoma not too long ago. Even a couple hundred pounds overweight, it was still in the 7s. They talked to him about how he thought that V8's would soon be pushed out of the compact class, because they were doing so much with the little turbo engines. He basically said that it surprised even him...

apparently he blacked out upon impact and then the throttle stuck. Thats why it kept going all the way to the end, and ended up in the sand trap. From where we were sitting all you could see was dust and it was kinda hard to get a clear picture of what really happened after the first impact.

From the corvette forum:

"We spoke with some of John's staff this morning, here is the most recent update..
John's stable enough this morning for surgery. He has sustained injuries to his spine & injuries to the head. He is in surgery as I sent this out. Family is with him in California."

Here's a couple of pics of the aftermath:

Last I heard he is in critical but stable condition.

I can't believe he survived. That chassis builder is the man!
