Re: Melling oil pump
The 55v is the one that was breaking off and destroying engines a few years back. It's made in China out of Chineese shit metal. I wouldn't put one in anything.
Use the melling "Select" series. Has a 5-digit number. There are two inlet sizes. 5/8 and 3/4". The stock SyTy pick up is 5/8, but the 3/4" is available aftermarket.
As far as "sucking the sump dry" goes, my thought is "where does the oil go if its not in the sump?" (Answer: Nowhere. ) High volume pumps have longer gears. If the relief pressure is reached, the pump bypass valve opens, and the excess oil is returned to the pump inlet. All that is "lost" is horsepower in the form of heat, and extra wear on the distributor gear.
A V6 has 25% fewer bearings and lifters than a V8. Putting a high volume pump intended for a V8 into a V6 is overkill. And detrimental to gear wear, heat rejection to the oil, with no improvement in bearing wear. Build the engine with the correct clearances, and the stock pump at stock pressure is adequate.
