Need a little info on how to sell my Typhoon.

Mr. Keith
I have a 93 Typhoon that I have kept garaged for most of the time I have had it. The engine has been rebuilt back in 2006 and she currently has about 76k miles on her. Last month, the turbo seals went and now she smokes like crazy. I can not work on this truck anymore and I can't afford to get another turbo and have it installed. Can I sell this truck in its present state or do I have to correct the turbo issue first? What would be a reasonable asking price for this? I was going to sell the truck sooner but every time I looked at her I just couldn't do it. Now I can not keep up with the physical upkeep of this truck and would like to see it go to a good home. I will add some pics later if this is necessary. Personally, I was out matched by this truck when I bought it. I didn't have the mechanical skills to keep such a truck. She's never been in an accident.

I (as a hypothetical buyer) would offer you less based on mechanical work being needed. I'd probably deduct either A) the cost of the turbo repair + labor off your asking price, or B) some arbitrary figure to get you closer to my number.

As an aside, it's going to be a lot harder, and take a lot longer, to sell something that needs work as opposed to something "ready to go". Not only that, but you're probably going to get a shit-ton of lowball offers based on "my brother is a mechanic and says that's going to costs $2k to fix".

Maybe I should get her fixed. Its such a pain working on these trucks and it will take me forever to get it done.

Thanks for the input.

Is it a stock turbo? Maybe you can just buy a used one and replace the whole turbo. They seem to be pretty cheap these days.

Good luck,
Nick

Honestly, I don't know what turbo is in there. The turbo has an external wastegate(ATR) and my records show a "GN upgraded turbo". I first have to figure out how to get this turbo off.

I do but I have asked him so many times for assistance that I'm don't feel right leaning on him again. Nobody really likes working on these trucks because they are such a pain.

Can you get some pics of it?

3 nuts on the back of the turbo, 4 nuts connecting it to the exhaust manifold. Those nuts are going to be nasty to get off.

Yes definitelly take a few pictures and post them up. It's a pain in the ass to replace the turbo, but more time consuming than being hard.

I removed my stock turbo by myself and I'm in no way a mechanic. I remember using crows feet open ended wrenches to get some of the back bolts off.

I'll try to post some pics this week. I have her stuffed in my garage right now. I'll probably get around to it this weekend since the weather should be nice.

Truck values are pretty low right now, and needing work lowers the value even more. If you don't need to sell it, you might be better off keeping it for now. Getting it fixed (even if you have to pay someone to do it) will make it much easier to sell for a higher price, and may even cause you to change your mind about selling it, as others have said.

Then again, even if you get the turbo fixed, there's no guarantee it'll sell right away for a decent price. Check out the Trucks For Sale section - there are a lot of nice trucks selling for relatively small prices. It is possible that you could find the right buyer willing to do the work himself if he could pay a little less for the truck.

You could post it up as needing the work, and that you'll have the work done before the sale if the buyer wishes. That way it could go to a DIY guy willing to do the work or someone who just wants a working truck, but you wouldn't have to commit to the repair investment before knowing it was going to sell.

depending on shape, other issues, etc, I may be interested in it as is. Post up some pics and give a feel for what you want for it.

Not sure if Ryan(wheels) bought another one yet. He was looking for a fixer-upper...Jim

Thats good news. There isn't too much that needs done however there are a few things that need attention. I need my door hinges replaced on the drivers side, the turbo of course and she could use a paint job. The interior is ok but not perfect. She has a stereo system that was professionally installed but dated. Its the attention to detail stuff that if taken care of, would make it an awesome truck.

The truck was never beat on or raced. Most problems occurred from sitting than actual use. I've always wanted one of these but once I got it, I knew I was over my head. I drove the truck like it was made of glass for the most part.
