Need Help!! Front differential locked-up

What a headache do I have... Received a call from the shop today... They say the front differential's the problem... Shavings in the oil.... Asking $600 alone just to take it appart.... they aren't sure if it's going to need bearings or a rack and pinion..

Need some suggestions at this point... Is it wiser to find a used front differential as a replacement?? Do our front differential have posi??? Need an answer quickly.. trucks on the lift and they need to know my intentions by tomorrow morning...

i dont know about the internals of the front diff, but i would just get a uaed one, you can probaly find one for around 400 bucks, good luck

$600 just to take it apart????? I think I would get a second opinion...A complete rebuild with new ring/pinion, bearings, seals should run about $1k....Check with a 4 wheel drive specialty shop...your axle unit should take no more than 2 to 3 hours to disasemble....Volvo dealers get $100 hour flat rate, GM's here charge $65 to $75...I can get you the labor time guide rate for an overhaul on your axle unit, or just call your friendly GMC dealer...

I had the same thing happen to me. Just ended up buying a used one out of a Ty that had caught fire. They cracked it open to clean it, and then installed it. No problems. Total cost was about $400 (parts +install)
