need some turbolink cable help please not urgent

i have had tl sitting in the box for a few weeks now, and finally had time to install it on my wife's laptop, bring it all out to teh truck with a power inverter to run the pc, etc, then brilliantly noticed her ltop doesnt have a serial port - guess it's too new or non legacy.
i dunno shit bout laptops, nor want to.
anyhoo, it does have usb port - i ass-u-me someone's already run into this, and no, i don't wanna use the search, kurt.
so, i would appreciate it if anyone has some feedback - usb to serial adapter cable work?
does it exist?
assuming so, anyone able to recommend a good one?
its a toshiba laptop, should that have any bearing at all.

i've been working with t-link again, helping them test certain serial to usb adapters. if you're going to get one, i would recommend getting one from them, because it's gauranteed to work. there are certain ones out there that definitely don't, and definitely do. i apologize for not being able to remember the certain brand that works in all cases. i believe it's from best buy, but don't quote me.

anyway, if you need one, your best bet is to either buy one from them, or buy the same exact one from another source.

I had a truck load of problems getting my TL to work. I tried the adaptor from best by(which is now clearance) and it didn't work well for me. I ended up going to TL and they sent me a adaptor that they have tested and it worked just fine. Just call those guys and they have a lot of adaptors they have bench tested. And they work hard to make sure it all works out, good customer service. IMHO

Alright, now I called a tech a synchrotech and he ASSURED me this would work with our stuff. Said it was a plug n play type thing, just like you had a serial port on the laptop. I HAVE NOT ACTUALLY TRIED THIS. Just want to make sure I don't get blamed in case it doesn't work, but with all my research on it, it should work. I was going to purchase but TL ended up sending me a compatible adaptor hub. Still plan on trying it in the future, but in no hurry. The tech stongly recommended the ruggedized version, said it was pretty tough, not like normal pcmcia cards. HTH

We are in the process of testing several USB/serial adapters … some work better than others (and some don’t work at all!)



You’ll want to download and install 4.0.3 from http://www.appAuto.com/discus (in the upgrades section) first, since we’ve made a change to allow for more compatibility with different USB adapters.



So far we’ve had good results from the Belkin F5U103, the Cablemax dual port adapter (http://www.cablemax.com … the DUAL port one), and the FTDI (http://www.ftdichip.com) adapter.



We’re testing more and will post the list out on the Discussion Group (http://www.appAuto.com/discus)
