Need Transmission Advice

My trans went out on my Ty and I took it to the shop (under warranty) and they were to put a new trans in. I asked "you know this is a special trans, right?" He said, " yeah regular 700r4". I knew I was in trouble before the trans even came out. Well, sure enough, dumbasses put a REGULAR 700r4 trans in it and it doesn't shift like the stock trans that came out. They refuse to accept responsibility, but did put a corvette governor on it and it didn't do much. I have purchased a B&M Transpack and was wondering if installing it will restore the 1-2 hard shift. I know I'm gonna tear up this tranny cuz it takes forever to shift between gears. An idea I had was to just beat on the trans, kill it, then throw it back in these dumbasses faces and say "I told you so". I'd rather fix my truck and have it ready for Nats. Word to the wise- if a 19 year old kid claims to know a thing or two about these trucks, he probably does. All I am asking for is some advice to get it working great agian, or if I should hunt for the RIGHT tranny. The warranty is long gone now, and expired 3 days after the trans went in, so thats not an option.

I went through the same thing with mine. I had to be a complete ass (which comes natural) to the GM dealer insisting that the Trans was different. Picked up the truck and they said "Yeah you were right it is a special tranny". I thought "No shit". The new tranny did not shift like the original. I found out from Brian Hartman that GM can use whatever they want for a replacement trans. They are the manufacturer they decide.
I would not trash your new tranny. It will be a good starting point to build one that will hold up. It will be much easier and cheaper to start with one in good shape.
What parts you will need to change depends how hard you drive, your mods, and your goals.

I am adding a Transgo kit , bigger boost valve, billet accumulator, and some other small parts to make it shift like it it supposed to.

Buy your parts or service from someone who knows how to build one for these trucks. It doesn't matter if the local shop can build one that can hold up in some supposedly bad-ass car....SyTy's are very adept at breaking "bullet-proof" trannys. Talk to Hartman he has a good reputation for our trucks. Expensive to some but worth it.

The syty has a different output shaft.
"B" identifier on the accumulator in the valve body.(makes for a firmer shift)
3-4 WOT upshift sleeve on the throttle valve in the valve body.
It has a "093" servo in the 2-4 servo lineup (AKA Corvette servo, holds 2nd and 4th with more force) but it might not have the additional spring the vette has in it. Make sure you get one with the extra spring in it.
It came with a .471 Boost valve in the pump. .500" is available anywhere for about $10 to $12(increases boost pressure vs. throttle opening).
They also have a "GS" identifier on the valve body separater plate. Very important.
Late model Tys have a combination apply ring in the 3-4 clutch stack and a #7 apply ring and a heavy duty rear planetary with oil deflector on top.
Sytys also have an additional check ball that sits on the valve body.

All this stuff except for the planetary and the apply rings can be fixed with the trans in place.

Yeah, they're different. Just a little

You need to see if you can get all your old parts back if you going to re do it. The vette Gov is probably closer to a SyTy but we acutally have a police like Gov in with hardley any weight on it. Most of the stuff can be changed without pulling the tranny but it would be wise to go throught it again to see what they missed IE: bushings, spring delete. There are a couple of other things that can be done while it's apart. Most important is getting the original parts back on it! VB, VBplate, Gov, Pump?, valves. All these things are important. Get all old parts if you can. If not talk to Waller or Brian and they can get you the right parts used. I know where you can get some new. Either way good luck.

Word to the wise- if a 19 year old kid claims to know a thing or two about these trucks, he probably does.

Sounds like your talking to me?

I like how everyone quotes me :) The fact of the matter is, if they listened to what I said in the firts place, I wouldn't be in this mess. I have had bad experience getting it worked on. GM goodwrench could diagnose my bad engine last year and other messy stuff. I appreciate all the advice the members have given me.

Just remembered this Roadmaster Transmission in Schaumburg, IL is recommended by ChiTown SyTy

Roadmaster can fix you up, but chances are he'll want to tear the tranny down and start from scratch, cuz no one is sure what's really in there - meaning it wouldn't be cheap or bang for the buck at this point, but it'd be built stout.

I still say to fight with the trans shop.

Print the info out from this thread, say "Hey I KNOW you were aware of these parts, and that's what went into my transmission, right?". Go on a day you are pissed off and feeling really uppity...

Who is the shop btw? Where are you at in Chitown?

I got a 700r4 from Art carr and lasted two days
That time i didnt know anything about this forum so it was pretty difficult to know what to do This was the third tranny i got burned
I wish i knew about Hartman earlier
So i stay with the 700r4 and Scott from art carr sended all the extreme parts to me for that tranny. He said its good for 700 HP
I did the rebuilt on my own and installed a shift kit Scott sended to me
Its been 1 year now and it still runs good ,shifts hurd.
I also used two big tranny coolers so i dont have to worry about temps
I learned the hard way

The shop is not a tranny shop, so they sent away for the rebuilt unit. I honestly forgot the name of the rebuilder, but when i took it to a trans shop, they did know the rebuilder. They knew right away who rebuilt it, because it has a GRAY tranny pan, and shell. The tranny is supposedly warrantied for 12,000 miles. I am SOOOOO tempted to do a bunch of launches on it, blow it up, then let them decide what to do. I wouldn't mind eating up the labor for a CORRECT unit. However, their neglegence to put the right tranny in would place the blame on them. These people did a good job at my motor when it blew, and the tranny job would be Christmas if it was the right unit. I've been back there over the last few month on different occasions, and they are VERY unsupportive ( hence, my idea to blow the tranny, and go in there raging). They think I don't know what I am talking about, and are not taking this seriously. Thanks to all of your help, I am gonna combat this with the fact/figures/specifications I need and post what I find out.

Yeah, that really sucks. I think Blake posted this scenario a couple of months back as a likely outcome of taking your tranny to a shop. Tranny shops don't and won't even listen to you. They assume they now it all and anything you say is just testing their patience as they sit there and listen to as little of what you have to say before they can step in and hush you up without seeming rude. They care about their rudeness at first but when you have to bring it back or are extremely dissatisfied. They will attempt to blame your driving and divert any responsiblity away from themselves. Transmission shops have so many customers that they don't care that they tick off a few. They can make station wagon owners happy all day.

Honestly, you will not have to try to blow up the tranny. It will go by itself. I'd just go have fun with it, or as much as having a dog tranny slowing your ass down. I bet several 10 psi launches will snap it quick. I can't say to go burn it up but I'd definitely use it as it was intended and if it doesn't hold up, well they should cover it.

I hate tranny shops with a passion. They feed you so much bull thinking you know crap. You are in for an unpleasant experience.

If you need to build up the tranny to stock form, I can help you with all of the parts to retro fit them to build a to spec 3LHM 93 Typhoon or a 2LHM Typhoon transmission. Syclone trannies can be upgraded to a 2LHM but not a 3LHM. No big deal though. Somethings changed over the years but they are built so inconsistanly that you have to build quite a few to get two that even match.

Oh well, call me if you get so frustrated you can kill and I'll help you with anything I can or point you in the right direction.

Good Luck,

Brian
