Sorry that I'm chiming in here, but I had that done for the stock turbo, truck ran great. I'm pretty confident in saying that it definitely increased the efficiency of the stock turbo. Forewarning, it took a long time to get the turbo back from SM. I wasn't pushed for time but, just wanted to let you know that it may take a while.My ty is factory stock & plan to keep it that way based on the advise given here on the board. However I am considering removing the turbo & sending it down to sportsmachines for their batmowheel/port/coating service to make it all it can be, hopefully there will be some discussion wether that's a worth while & "safe" mod.

I don't believe you'll need a tune. However, I wasn't data logging the truck with the stock turbo at the time. So I can't clarify if there is a substantial difference that would require tuning past the stock parameters. I put close to 3,000 miles on this Turbo already, and haven't noticed an issue directly with the turbo. (Though the transmission decided to poop the bed on me after beating on the truck more often than not haha. Its what I get for putting pedal to the floor at every stoplight.) The compressor wheel on my stock turbo had damage, and therefore I removed the turbo as soon as I got the truck. I haven't had a loss of power due to lack of fueling or noticeable amounts of knock. Which surprised me as the trucks stock engine was sitting at a nice 172,000 miles when I got my hands on it. I assume, that based on what I've read here, and talked to others regarding this turbo is pretty efficient up to 18psi. Afterwards there doesn't seem to be much gain. With the 2 Bar map sensor, even if the turbo is capable of 18psi, or more, you're limited to the stock parameters for what the ECU can interpret. Is there more efficiency that you could drag out of the turbo by tuning the stock parameters? I'm sure there is. However as for a functional bolt on mod, that requires tuning, I would direct that question to Sports Machines. They would know if its best to tune the truck after the modification or if its really not needed.
As many have said before the removal of the stock turbo can be frustrating. There is very little room to work with. I personally think the exhaust header flange nuts are the worst part. The angles to get them off aren't easy, but using an open end wrench with leverage gets them off quickly. Finding the right angle can be tough with a larger wrench. Overall I would say its very straight forward, the removal process is just frustrating at times. I'll attach pictures of the turbo when I received it back from SM and what it looks like installed in the truck.
