No Time Limit, No Budget Rebuild

So I bought this Typhoon this summer upon my return from Iraq.

I have wanted one for about 16 years, so I figured why not? I got a heck of a deal off of Ebay of all places and the only real issue with the truck was some of the normal items, or so I thought. Tune was a little whonky, IC was running a little hot, a few leaks here

and there and a couple rust spots. No big deal. So I drove her for a couple months and for some reason, I developed a Code 42 issue. No big deal, I figured I would just give her a tune up and see if that fixed it. Well, I started taking her apart and found some other issues that need addressed, such as enough rust in the intercooler that it wouldn't drain. I am thinking the metal lines had something to do with it.

Guess I will do the heater hose, metal line delete now I said to myself. Then I actually pulled the IC off and saw the stock pump still attached.

Looks like it is time for something a little beefier, perhaps this is a good time to pick up a Sureflo. Then I got to thinking, if I am going to do all this little stuff, why not just tear the whole thing apart and build it exactly how I want it, to include the interior, suspension, steering, engine, trans, the whole shebang. I don't really even know everything I want to do yet, but I am not really giving myself a time limit to get it done, so no real worries there. I figure one or two big projects every couple months and little stuff as I get to it. I am curious if anyone else has taken this approach and actually finished a truck, or is it better just to crush it and try to get it done as fast as possible? I have the benefit of a garage, some decent tools, and a daily driver, so I don't need to have it on the rd. Also, if anyone has any input as far as decent upgrades or perhaps parts for sale, I am all ears. Also, I am fairly comfortable with interior and some of the basic engine stuff, but I am going to have to have the engine rebuilt by a shop and perhaps the trans and diff if they require it. If anyone has any shops they actually trust in the Florida Panhandle, I would love to get that information. This is my first turbo, so I am just a little fuzzy on how to tackle this whole thing. Thanks for any constructive advise.

Smart move on replacing the IC lines. I bought my Ty after coming back from Korea and found out that my IC pump was not working and didn't know how long it had been like that (most likely from the previous owner, she was the original owner and didn't realize the maintenance needed to keep these trucks in decent running condition). Anyways, re-did the lines and IC pump and instantly noticed cooler temps. Use the search function if ya have any questions...there is a ton of info on here and I've learned a LOT since owning this truck. Welcome to the headaches and heartaches! Sharp-looking truck, too!

Jesus Christ your like a bunch of little kids. My truck is being built 30 min away from where he lives and I was just trying to help. I deleted the pics checkout the build thread if you want. PM me for my number if you want to talk. I won't be responding to this thread anymore for fear I upset someone who lives 1200+ miles away from us.

Thanks, I have a long way to get to get the Ty how I want her. Where were you in Korea? I actually spent 6 years at Yongsan. Small world.

Dude, that was worth the click. I won't be able to take my build anywhere near that level, not until my kids are through college anyway. It is nice to have a benchmark to strive for though. I will shoot you a PM for your engine shop as I fear I am going to need their services in the near future. I am also going to keep an eye on your build. It has been pretty warm, so hopefully you got some of your paint work done. Now if it would stop raining.........

Nice ty...!

Thanks. I wish I could take credit, but the former owners actually did all the work thus far. I am planning on improving the internals to match the external.

Overall, I am really excited to get this project underway. I am already on the prowl for parts. So far I grabbed up some tuning equipment that I know I will need. I am thinking about going with a carputer and just hook it up to do real time tuning and run all the entertainment/navigation. I have a set of C5 brakes from my vette laying around, so it looks like a few Renz products will be coming my way soon. I already have a silicone vac kit in the box, ready to go on, and the regular tune up items in my garage. I am itching to get to this build, but have to maintain some kind of plan to keep things in order. I will try to keep this thread going for those who enjoy such things, I know I like checking out other peoples builds for both insperation and ideas.

Did two tours there, actually. Back in 2001-2002, I was at Carroll down near Daegu. My last one was from 2008-2009 and I was at Humphreys that time around.

I was there from late 2002 to late 2008. Never made it down South that much. I heard Humphrys has really changed in the last couple of years. I am going to bet you are glad to be back though, missing all of the NK stupidity going on presently.

Yeah, they were already building Humphreys up while I was there. Yep, I'm definitely glad I'm not there right now!
