Oil pan gasket

My 93 Typhoon had an ticking/knocking noise near the middle of the oil pan I could hear it the best when I was laying under the truck and the engine running. I used the screwdriver to listen to it. So I pull the oil pan to check if something was loose (the gasket was leaking and the return line was leaking too) I don't see anything. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions while I have the pan down. The truck only has 22,000 miles on it and I just got it 6 months ago and I have not been able to really beat on it because of all I have been doing. It sat for 18 years in a warehouse. I'm replacing gaskets, hose and fluids.

If you are sure the noise is coming from that area. Could be a rod bearing. Not sure if a crankshaft bearing would do that.

I have a knocking noise but can't pinpoint it. Doesn't seem to be coming from the oil pan area. I think it my be the torque converter.

Re: Oil pan gasket

Before you put it back together. Any metal in the pan? Check down around the drain plug. Some crud there is normal but not much. Also cut the filter, take out the element, hacksaw the ends off, let it drain/dry for a day and examine for metal in the bottom of the pleats. (Much easier to see when pleats have drained for a day.) If pan and filter are both clean it's probably not a bearing.

Pictures help.

Let us know what you find.

Re: Oil pan gasket

The pan is clean the oil filter is clean I cut it opening no shavings. I'm wondering if the noise I heard was the engine mounts. Anyone else heard of this??? They are the originals and they are pretty dry rotted.

Re: Oil pan gasket

Might not be the mounts but those mounts look pretty crusty. Might want to look into replacing them "just because". Or get a tie down and slap it on there so you don't wind up breaking it lose and hit your shroud/coolant hose, etc. IMHO - if you do replace mounts with the rubber stock replacements, still get a tie down for extra assurance. Mine had less than 1000 miles on them before the drivers side broke loose (while TYRODD was giving it a boost launch. lol)

Re: Oil pan gasket

Do you know a link for solid motor mounts

I have a set that you can have for what I paid for them. I think it was $60 shipped. Thats the route I was going to go but with motor still in, trying to get the lower pads off the frame was almost impossible so I said screw it and went with rubber replacements + tie down.

I can snap pics of the solid mounts I have in the morning sometime if intetested.

Meh...im mistaken...I have just the frame pads for solids. Also checked and I paid $55 shipped. You would still need to find solid mounts though.

Yes. Take the center two main caps off and LOOK at the bearings.

I don't care if it has 2,200, 22,000, or 122,000 miles. The center bearings in a SyTy are always suspect until inspected, and proven to be serviceable. The center two are usually down to the copper. It's not difficult to roll in a new set of mains with the pan off if they are indeed worn, which if its knocking, they may well be. Take a look. It costs nothing with the pan already off.

If you do elect to roll in a new set of bearings, remember to remove the serpentine belt first. And loosen all the caps so the crank falls a bit to loosen the upper inserts.A cotter-pin with the closed end moosh'd into a "T" is a suggestion for a tool to put in the oil hole to push the upper insert out/into the block.
