Photoshopped picture?

Re: Photoshopped picture?

Matt, would you mind elaborating a bit more on your 80e swap? You mentioned you had to cut down and weld the shift shaft. Did you flush the trans and rebuild it or just use it straight out of the junkyard?

Thanks!

I changed the fluid, filter, and shortened the shift shaft. Also installed a new torque converter. Other than that its a stock 80e with ~50k on it. I got it off ebay from a guy that was parting out a 2500hd that a tree had fallen on.

I went that route for 2 reasons.

1). I'm cheap.
2). I'm curious just how far you can push a stock 80e. I've heard reports that it will take quite a bit.. We'll see..

Re: Photoshopped picture?

Thanks mate, appreciate the reply. I too have one and am wondering how best to proceed. How difficult was the shaft to shorten? I don't have a TIG but I do have a MIG.

I have a decent converter that I know is too loose and I have a newer Circle D that was $1000 so I am hesitant to put it in if the trans is going to kill it. I need to cut the output shaft down as well as it is from a 2WD.

Do you have any thoughts? Sorry for the :hijack: - I can PM if you'd prefer!

What is the latest with yours? and thanks!

I used a MIG to shorten it.. Not too difficult. I cut it to length, cone shaped either side, clamped in place and very slowly welded. I'd basically lay a tack then let it cool, lay another tack, let it cool.. Repeat till its all welded. 4 or 5 tacks total.. I was afraid that if I got it too hot that it would ruin the rubber seal that it passes through..

So my cladding is done and I put the decals on that Renz made me. Shortly after I did that I started having some wiring/ECM issue where only half of the injectors are firing(odd side). I'm not sure whats causing this and need to find time to do some troubleshooting. I did order an ECM from a salvage yard so that I have a spare and can swap that to see if its the issue.. Also, Keith sent me new injector drivers to solder in the ECM as I was thinking I may have fried one. Once I get it running right I'll pull it out and take some pics. I only have crappy indoor pics where it sits for now..

Awesome, gonna keep that color on the cladding?

Probably.. At least for now. I just need to paint the front fenders and front bumper cover. The rest is done. I may wet-sand and buff/wax the paint sometime this spring..

Re: Photoshopped picture?

As for the injectors not working, i had the same problem on the ty, 1 injector just died.
Just put 12v on the injector connector and see if it draws amp (make is spark). Mine didnt

So you had a bad injector causing the same issue??? I was wondering if that may be the problem.

I guess I could just disconnect them 1 at a time on that side and try to start it...??

I don't quite understand the test you performed? Its sounds like you just quickly manually energized each injector???

I hAd an infrared temp gauge, so i could track down the cilnder that was not firing. Ruled out i didnt have spark. Than i just put 12 v onto that injector and it didnt click/draw amps. And grabbed a spare to see what it would do on 12v, and it did click and draw amp.
Its an easything to do to rule things out and only takes a few seconds.

gotcha.. I've got a whole bank that isn't firing. It's all of the injectors on the even side. The odd side is firing.

I've got my ECM wired to use both drivers.. My 1st suspicion was that the injector driver crapped out. I tried putting the wiring back to stock so that all injectors would drive off one driver and that did not work. So then I tried swapping which driver each side was wired to. The even side still did not work and the odd did.

This really makes be think its something with the injectors or wiring on the even side. I think I will try unplugging the even side injectors 1 at a time the next time I'm over there.. Maybe one of the injectors has shorted out and won't allow the ECM to drop that bank low..

Re: Photoshopped picture?

Had the same issue before, was a bad connection on ecm connector. Something to look at.

Re: Photoshopped picture?

So I've been doing a lot of reading about lowering leaf spring vehicles. Originally I planned to just get a larger set of blocks but after reading what a bad idea they really are I decided to try my luck dearching the leafs.

Before:

After:

The Process:

1) I started in the center of each leaf and drew a line every 2".
Middle%20Spring%20de%20Arched%201%20inch.jpg

2) Next put the leaf a press and push down on each line. You can put a stop under the leaf if you want so that you go the same distance each time but I just eye-balled it..

My spring pack only had 3 leafs total. I only dearched the overload spring and the middle spring. I never even removed the main leaf from the truck. I took ~1.5" off of the overload and ~2.5" off of the the middle leaf. Once I reinstalled everything this dropped the truck ~1.5"..

I haven't driven it yet so I'm curious to see how this works out..

The things you come up with to try, then figure out how to do, then get done never cease to amaze me. I wish I possessed half your skill set and even a third of your dedication to working on projects that you do.

On a completely different tack, what are the three black dots in the door opening in this pic?

Why thank you sir! :)

In its previous life someone applied a rust-proof treatment to the inside of the panels. Those are little rubber plugs where holes were drilled to spray the rust treatment in.

Zie-Bart Tidy car. As Matt said a rust proofing product. I had a car with those little caps all over the place.

That was my exact guess, although I've never seen it before.

We don't have this kind of stuff on the West Coast. I'm glad too. Seems like butchery. I'd be bummed to see that every time I opened the door.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the little black caps. I can tell you that I searched for a nice 4-door for several years before purchasing this one and most that I found were very rusty. This one was not. I think it was a combination of the rust treatment + the big aluminum running boards that were on it that saved it..

Re: Photoshopped picture?

Also my 4-bolt roller short block is done. It now has an all forged and balanced 383 stroker rotating assemble with low compression(~9:1) coated pistons. I'll get better pics when I pick it up..

Forged%20Crank.jpg

Coated%20Pistons.jpg

For now I'm going to run a stock LT1 cam with 1.6 roller rockers which will give me ~.49" of lift for both intake and exhaust.

Unfortunately I won't have time to install the new block until after Carlisle..
