Project sounds good Syclone!!

Well after rebuilding my Syclone for the last few years ive decided i cant take the stereo anymore. Ive been using it around the shop to make delivery's and pick up materials. Since its getting used a lot i have decide to indulge in a Auto Addictions style stereo. This will be used as my build log for others to see whats going on.

Build will consist of Custom built Fiberglass kick panels With MB Quart 5" Components
We will be building Fiberglass door pods to house 2 JL audio 6.5" Mid-bass drivers in each door. for the subs a pair of Alpine Type R flat piston drivers in a Custom built Fiberglass enclosure. An amplifier rack will be integrated into the sub box somehow!!
I'm going to Dynamat everything doors, roof, floor kicks and whatever else rattles. Powermaster 200 amp alternator and i will convert the dash to double din for now. Future plans are to fiberglass the dash for a motorized ipad 3 to act as the head unit.
A JL Audio HD1200 will power the Alpine subs and a JL Audio 600/4 HD for the kicks and the 2 pair of mid bass drivers.

This thing should be wicked !! Today the doors were started and the truck stripped. Dynamat was laid on the floors and rear wall.

Pocket was removed and holes made for speaker clearance.

Re: Project sounds good Syclone!!

Just for kicks, what would you want for a set of the fibreglass pieces on the bottom of the door panels? That looks much better than what I did.

For something like you see here lower door about 500.00 a set in primer. Paint or vinyl rap be extra depending on finish. Its about 10 hours labor a set with sanding and finishing. I would do them rough with a quickie 60 grit finish for 350 a set. Group buy any one!!!

Re: Project sounds good Syclone!!

Today i didnt have much time however im committed in getting this done in a reasonable amount of time. Started the kick panels made the base by glassing the kicks to get the shape. Also sanded the door panels down with 80,120.220,then 400. Still have to clean up the speaker holes then off to paint.

Re: Project sounds good Syclone!!

Got some time today to finish the kick panels and get started on the sub box. Just need to glass the front of the sub box/amp rack then sand and paint. I contoured the box into the back of the truck in one piece. It should look sick. Kicks came out fantastic they fit perfect and should look great after paint.

First i cut them down to size!!

resin is applied let dry them the plugs removed ready to sand.
img1191q.jpg

Sanded then body filler to make it smooth speakers and grill test fit.

Sub box framing started contoured to floor and sides for a flush built in look.
syclonebuild015.jpg

By fdeninno

Middle baffles added to make 2 chambers for the Alpine subs. Amps will go between them

Thats all for today. Next up i will fleece the front of the enclosure and figure out how i want the amp rack to look. 75% done.

Re: Project sounds good Syclone!!

looks good, how much weight is the back boxes and door stuff adding to the truck? Are you going to be running a ported or sealed back sub box?

Re: Project sounds good Syclone!!

Hey Frank I have a mini truck article from years and years ago where they put a stereo in in standard cab S10. When it came to the sub box they didn't put a back on the box they used the rear of the cab as the back of the box to allow them a little more air space.

What are you thoughts on this in a real world application? I always thought if I put a system in my truck I would do that, but maybe it was just a dumb article and has no validity to it.

I like it so far. Is all the upper range sound coming from next to your feet? Kick panels and door pods only?

I have done that in the past. You have to build the front of the box then seal it into the back of the cab. This makes it semi permanent and going back to stock not possible very easily. It only saves you 3/4 of an inch. Now a days they make slim woofers that are only 3" deep. This makes thing a bit easier. As far as sound quality using the back of the cab is fine if you sound deaden the crap out of it. ts going to flex a little but you wont hear it.

The kicks are filtered for highs only, mid bass comes from the doors there wont be much if any of vocals coming from the mid bass drivers. The MB Quart speakers im using in the kicks are the old QSD components. I dont know if you have ever heard them but they are amazing. They were over a 1000 bucks a set when they came out in the late 90s. Ive been sitting on a few sets for my own cars just never spent the time to build a system for myself until now.
