Pulled my motor out last night

I got bored last night, went out to my garage and decided to pull my motor. It actually wasn't as bad as I thought to pull this motor out. I left the tranny in and didn't drop the differential or loosen the cab bolts like I've heard of others doing. It took about five to six hours for me to get this thing out ( the lift helped alot ). I'm going to have this motor balanced and blueprinted and go with some stronger rods and pistons. I'm still trying to do somewhat of a budget build so unless I get a great deal on some heads from someone on here I'm going to re-fresh the stock ones for now. Anyway, here is the motor pulled out of the truck.

I think all of us sytyers have seen that scene once or twice before. I am jealous of that lift!!! 6 hours is a good time on first pull before. Sidenote What is the other car sitting there?

Re: Pulled my motor out last night

The car beside it is a friends 81 camaro. We put a brand new ZZ4 crate motor in it. That should be a pretty fun car when it's complete. My 70 chevelle is on the other side of the camaro.

Re: Pulled my motor out last night

I would not freshen up the LB4 heads, get @ least some L-35's they bolt right in.:2cents:

As I have stated before,,,the LB4's are the worst flowing SBC (same as V-6) heads ever produced. They were used on the Chevy trucks 1987-1995 IIRC.
BTW,,nice lift.

Re: Pulled my motor out last night

Off-topic: how much power do those ZZ4's make? My Auto Tech instructor has one in his 99 Suburban. Nice Chevelle! A buddy of mine had a 66 Malibu that was close to the same color.

I'll try to find a set of L35s if I can. I've searched the casting numbers but it sounds like there are several vesions of these heads. Which ones do I need to bolt straight up with no mods?

The ZZ4 is 355hp and 400lbs of torque. It should be pretty fun in that car.

They make that number with long tube headers and the right carb. I know quite a few people that install them with their stock fuel injection and stock exhaust manifolds, they will make make quite a bit less than the advertised HP number.

Re: Pulled my motor out last night

Here is the #3 cylinder and #3 piston. #4 cylinder doesn't look much better. I'm glad that I pulled the motor before things got worse.

Re: Pulled my motor out last night

Ok, so I pulled the rest of the motor apart today. The end result is ... bent rod in #5, and broken ringlands in #3 and #4. I'm going to take this thing down to the machine shop and see what it's gonna take to clean up the cylinders and then I'll be looking for parts. Piston's are my main concern. I want to stay as close to stock compression as possible because I plan on leaving the truck alone when I'm done. I will be using the factory boost solenoid and I don't want to raise the compression of the motor and allow knock with the factory boost settings. I'm going to order eagle rods as well. Any advise on the pistons would be great!

Ralph, send me an email please so i can get back to you ASAP once i figure it out.

mike@raceprovenmotors.com

i need to see what i have into it, since it is different from our standard packages.

I also forgot i have a STOCK motor that had 10k miles, but had been sitting for probably 10 years. I took it all apart, fresh machine, new rings and bearings and put it all back together. Basically checked everything out top to bottom. It will obviously be cheaper then the one with rods/pistons.

let me know.

Re: Pulled my motor out last night

Well, I got a call from the machine shop today and the cylinders cleaned up nice at .030 so I ordered some srp 139632 pistons. I found a set of eight on Ebay for only $350.00 (plus shipping) brand new in the box. I also have a new set of eagle rods that I picked up for $369.00 (carshopinc.com) so my budget build is working out so far. The block is being decked along with balancing the rotating assembly and I'm having it blueprinted. I have also ordered a complete Victor reinz gasket set, new lifters, and double roller timing chain set. I'm going to be using a stock cam in this motor along with the stock heads that have been completely re done I know...I know, but remember that this is a budget build. I also bought a rebuilt stock turbo that is nice and tight. My goal is to have a really strong engine that I will only be running stock boost on without breaking the bank.

Re: Pulled my motor out last night

lol i wish i knew someone around here who would get "bored" and pull my motor lol... i wouldnt even know where to begin, let alone be sitting around and just thinking "go for it" lol

I'm looking to do an exact rebuild like yous (stock style) so please post up all costs when this is all over and done with so I know what to expect to be paying. Thx and good luck with your build

Re: Pulled my motor out last night

^^^ I will definitely do that man. BTW... It's really not that bad to pull the motor out of these trucks. It looks worse than it is but once you get started it goes pretty smooth.

Very rare to not get carried away while you're in there... Impressive self restraint :D

4 bolt mains maybe?

You've got the right pistons and rods for an upgrade one day...just the mains... ;)

Re: Pulled my motor out last night

Finally got the motor back from the machine shop. They put the rotating assembly together after they balanced it. I had them blueprint the bottom end as well. I'm going to finish putting it together and try to get this thing back on the road in a couple of weeks. I have everything I need to finish it up except for the timing chain set because I had to send it back to summit (wrong one). I should have the correct one by the end of this week though.
