Dan- And you wondered why I never put the transfer case brace back on!!!

Yeah, but I actually got that bolt out and got the engine on the stand today. I threw my back out in the process too. :squint:

I have to use my transfer case after spending $600 on the input shaft from GB for the 4L80E ;)

I use a *short* 14MM combination wrecnch on my transmission pulls for that one bolt. My craftsman wrench is too long to get up in there. Before I cut a little off the end of it to make it work, I seached in my old tool box and found a wrecnch in there that just fit. That one stays in my tool box all the time now.

Yeah I was looking through GB's old post about removing the transmission and he recommended a 14mm socket on the end of a wobble extension. That worked perfectly. I was wrestling with it for 40+ minutes before afraid I was going to round it off, but with the wobble extension, it came off on the first try.

Dang Jeremy. I've been out of it for so long now. Let me know when you're wrenchin' and what you're up to. I'd like to come by and see you one of these days soon.

No response from Mike Lee, Nolan, or Phil Long. Looks like it's going to take longer than I thought to get this truck fixed, damn.

i've pulled my motor both alone, and w/ the tranny attached.

Pulling it w/ the tranny still attached took WAY less time, but i also took the front clip completely off to do some other things. I don't know if i'll install them together or 1 piece at a time.

Holy crap, now that's what I call a teardown! No way I'm going that deep...

Hey Steven, how'd you like that 5.6 earthquake we just had? That was pretty wild...fortunately, nothing was broken.

no kidding, that earthquake was crazy!! I had just got to the gym in pleasenton and I thought that I had ate some special sushi (bad dinner choise anyways), cause I was sitting in a chair and the whole room started to move, as if I wasn''t feeling sick enough...lol

but to add to you post...I just pulled the front end off like renz did and pulled the tranny and transfercase with the engine, it was easy after you have the radiator support off.

pulled mine last month.

2 parts makes it a whole lot easier. you still need to lift the motor straight up, but at least you dont have to tilt the whole assembly.

As I've done it several times this way also, I'm curious about something I can't make out in the picture:

1. Is the front differential still completely bolted in?
2. Is the body still bolted to the frame on both sides?
3. Is the 'pinch weld' at the top of the transmission tunnel still intact (not 'trimmed')?

If the answer to all three is 'yes', what am I missing? When I did it (on three different T-10's) with the trans on the engine, NO amount of 'tilting' the engine allowed the pan to clear over the top of the front diff. I had to remove the body bolts and lift the front of the body off the frame about 2", before it would 'go in' (or 'come out').

Curious

Yes to all 3 questions. I forget now how exactly i got it out that way, just that it really wasn't difficult. The angle the motor/tranny is hanging at in the pic, is the angle it was at the entire time when pulling the motor. You can see if have the front of the truck on jackstands set at their highest point. Maybe i just found the magic angle for the motor/tranny for removal :dunno:

from what i've heard and experienced (pulling the motor from my sy) you can pull the motor and tranny together on a typhoon, but NOT on a syclone.. you have to seperate the two or unbolt the cab and lift it up a bit.

I yanked the motor and transmission, transfer case out in one shot on my Syclone, I had the front end jacked up like Renzs said to do, and I did loosen the front diff allowing it to drop about 1/2-3/4 an inch and we pulled out the tranny dipstick also. This helped, also if you have friends that can help you tilt the whole assembly around so you can clear everything, I think the transfer case was the more PITA part to get over the diff and past the downpipe without one of those cool engine lifters with a tilt. I beat the 'pinch weld' flat now that everything is out for a "quicker" installation. no unbolting of the cab here

you lowered the diff though.. on a syclone you either have to jack up the cab or lower the diff to pull the motor/tranny together.

I don't think that's the total solution. I recall that it was hitting in the top of the tunnel furthur back, not at the very front where the pinch weld is.

If you haven't put it all back in yet, it will be interesting to hear wether it worked or not.

The cars I had difficulty with were a 94 Bravada (had to jack up the body), and a 91 extra-cab pick-up. (had to jack up the cab). Core support and front clip was off on both projects.

The comment about this will work on a Ty, but NOT on a Sy is interesting. My research has revealed that there should be no differences in the frames, or floor/firewall/tunnel configuration, regardless of the body style. (06, 16, 03, 103, 53,) as long as they're all 'T' series. S-series (2WD) the pan is shorter, no front diff, = no problem.

DaveP
Here's a test: What is the definition of the (5) body styles listed above???
(hint: I know the Ty's style is on the door jamb certification sticker)
Cheers

The sy's longer wheelbase might be part of the issue.. my sy is currently just a cab and a frame.. the cab bolts are seized so I haven't been able to remove it from the frame.. but I tryed for hours to remove the tranny and the motor together and the pan hit the front diff no matter the angle.. so I finally seperated the two.

I had the same experience, when I was installing the engine in the Sy.

Well, I bought a new engine hoist and stand today. Took most of the day just to assemble everything. Will yank the motor tomorrow if all goes well. More pics to come.
