rear coil-overs

hey guys i got a few questions about using RPM or others rear coil-over in my truck. i tryied posting on s10forum, but all i got was bag this, bag that, why would you use a coil over and leaf? ect.

anyhow, here the point. a few of you are using these, and are very happy. my current setup is regular S10 leafs(not dearched) and 2" blocks. i was thinking of getting BellTech leafs, and call it a day, but then i came across this coil over thing.

this got me to thinking, rather than buying BellTechs, could i just run one leaf, use the coil-overs, and slap on some Battle Bars. i could then use the coil-over to adjust my ride height, and those BBs would control all the axle wrap from the one leaf.

what are your thoughts? -Jim.

Re: rear coil-overs

very doable... axle wrap will be crazy!!! but if you set up the battlebars up to be very tight, it might work.

hope more people respond to this thread, as i've been wondering this exact question.

Yes, turbotime and RPM sells coilovers for the rear to use in cojunction with the stock leaf spring.

I am planing on doing this soon.

i spent a ton of time figuring out what to use, how it worked, what adapters were needed, and tested it thoroughly. made a project post about it explaining everything. made a kit and put it on the web. nice to hear someone else is offering the same thing..... UGGGG

yeah, i didn't mean to steal your thunder...RPM was just the first to come to mind.

so does anyone think this is do-able on a nearly daily driven truck? or will it ride like a sore dick. maybe i should just stick with the BellTechs. -Jim.

correction... i would keep the top leaf and the overload, eliminating the middle leaf.
would this give me 2"+ drop though? remember, im just a regular S10.

why don't you just four link it with the coil overs.
im not interested in that kind of work.

ok let's start from the top... is this an s10 leaf or a blazer leaf??? got pics???

if blazer leaf, 2 door or 4 door??? (makes a difference)

are you going to retain the 2 inch drop block, and are looking to go to 4 inch drop all together?

Re: rear coil-overs

Its a 2 door 2WD Blazer. i currently have 2" blocks, but i want to get rid of those. i would like around 3" total drop. maybe ill just have my springs dearched, this is getting too complicated.

Belltech are suposed to be a 3" drop on regular S-series (My Sy dropped 2" with them). I would just get them.

ok now were getting somewhere..

you most likely have 3 leafs and an overload correct???

if so, remove the bottom 2 leafs, and retain the main leaf, and the overload.

this should allow you to get the desired 3 inch drop, eliminating the 2 inch drop block.

the reason i say to retain the overload is because with one leaf, the ride is uber soft, like a caddy.. but on a decent bump you will bottom out hard.

the main spring will lay almost flat on the overload, using it on extreme hard bumps and saving your suspension, and back.

by eliminating the 2 inch block you make more room for the battle-bars, or other traction device.

why do you want to run coil overs and leafs?sound kinda complicated getting it sorted

Re: rear coil-overs

typically the real coilovers are for typhoons because they bottom out once you lower them because the tires are not allowed to tuck (cladding in the way) this is not the case with s-10's. it also affects syclones but they are so lightweight that they dont bottom out nearly as much.

so...... the entire experiment was to see if i could run lowering blocks to get the look i wanted while maintaining enough spring rate to keep the truck off the bump stops. it worked out really well, and after adjusting everything umpteen bajillion times i found a great compromise in ride quality and ride height. the other thing that i gained, but wasnt planning on, was an incredible improvement in handling.

the install...... i usually take out the overload spring only. and put just enough preload in the coil spring so that at full droop it doesnt try to fall out. i dont take out any additional leaf springs because with the torque that these trucks make, i didnt feel comfortble that the entire rear end wouldnt twist under load.

Re: rear coil-overs

even with only a 2" drop, on a good bump i still bottom. i try like hell to avoid bumps, but in these parts its near impossible. i was hoping the coil over would stop this. i read E-RUEs thread covering this, and it seemed like this would work well for me. i also would like a truck that can corner a little. seemed like all the right reasons to get them, but everyone seems that they will over complicate things.

Re: rear coil-overs

i agree with E-RUE. this would be a great mod.

i personally use a 2 inch block on the sy, but it would still bottom on hard bumps.

my solution to this was to remove the overload spring, and use a 99 and newer silverado overload spring.

it's thicker, and 4 inches longer on each end. the best part about it is gm factory drilles a hole at each end, to use a small plastic rub washer.

i removed this and installed a rubber bumper, like that from a traction bar.

it added enough spring rate that it no-longer bottomes out on bumps, AND it has the added benifit of lifting and seperating on launch instead on squatting so hard.:D

Any benefit of running coil overs with Beltech lowered leafs?

i'd like to know this also. actually, i'd like to get my truck lower and not KILL the terrible ride quality that i already have

so, my question is, can you use the leafs for axle control and use the coilovers for ride height with any chance of success?

Re: rear coil-overs

I'm with ash. I would like to lower one of my Ty's a little more than the 2" Flex-A-Forms that are on it now (maybe add a 1" block for 3" total) but I don't want to bottom out if I run over a quarter laying in the street
