Just blew up my diff. so I need some options... Should I:
- rebuild the stock one
- replace it with an aftermarket unit... if so, any recommendations?

Can't help, lots of more knowledgeable folks here will. Curious how you broke it.

Can you define "blew up"? Reason I ask is that the diffs survive fairly well down into the low 10s so I wouldnt spend a pile of money on installing an aftermarket diff unless your power level really needs it.

Ive blown up the diff in my truck and it turns out that the stock gov lock POS limited slip actually was the culprit since it came apart and debri from it went through the ring gear and pinion which ruined it. If thats what happened to yours (the gears/posi is junk) then an Eaton posi and decent quality replacement gears would be the route Id take. Ive bought two Eatons from Randys Ring and Pinion as well as the install kits he sells and Ive been happy with the parts so far.

With that being said if you really want to replace the rear diff with an aftermarket piece just call up Strange Engineering, whip out the check book, and theyll build/ship you whatever diff you want from a stocker all the way up to a Dana 60 built to your liking.

I would replace the posi unit at a minium. This is where I got my eaton posi. Wayne is his name very helpful and CHEAP!

If your ring gear and pinion are fine I would just use them over. Thats what I did. Wayne can help with ring and pinion too if you decide to replace everything.

Not sure what the damage is yet... Opening it up this afternoon. My mechanical gave a quote of $1100 to rebuild the piece depending on what's up... we'll see I guess.

I'm building 2 12 bolt rear ends for Syclones right now. I'm amazed at how well the 7.5 holds up in these trucks. I'm even more amazed at how well the little 7.2 IFS holds up. A larger rear end is usually the best way to go when parts start to break. If the Governor Lock is all that broke then put in a new Eaton posi and it should be fine.

I was gonna say this but was afraid to even say Strange Engineering and checkbook in the same sentence.:rotf:

Sounds like it ran without lube in it. Long time slow running leaks will mess one up. You may want to invest in one of these if you are gonna be doing long WOT runs:

Dabney Crump does a lot of long distance runs. I'm not sure if he has to do any rear diff cooling. My bet is the fluid was low and you paid for it in the way of bearings.

You can couple that to one of these:
Rear End & Transmission CoolersFLUIDYNE Racing's DB-30217 and DB-30216 offer an affordable super efficient all-aluminum oval tube option for your transmission, rear end, or lower horsepower engine oil cooling needs. We accomplish this using the same technology that cools Winston Cup's 700+ horsepower engines, but in a smaller, more versatile package!
