Rear end swap.

Although Ive searched the forum and web mildly for some clues I still havent got one.

So I'll ask the broadest question I can:

What is involved with swapping an Extreme rear end in place of the stocker?

Furthermore:

What are the differences between the two? (same ratio, posi vs non-posi?, width at hubs?, and obviously disc brake versus drum, different # splines/different housing size?)

What exactly is the parking brake (e-brake) on the Extreme rear disc setup?

Thanks.

i guess i would have to ask why are you considering swapping the rear ends? did yours break? are you now 2wd?

if you are going to go through the hassle atleast install something good like a 12 bolt, 8.8 or a 9". Just make sure the gearing is the same.

Sorry I dont really have the specs on the extreme rear ends.

There was a 2 or more page thread about this swap a few months ago.. I cant remember who started it but I'll poke around and see if I can find it. Lots of info in there that I wish I would have printed out now... DOH.. If I remember right there is a 8.5 bolt in but it has to be from a 4x4 truck but not a blazer (ZR2 4x4 is too wide drum to drum BTW). I cant remember for sure though on the specifics of what truck to pull on out of for a bolt in.

Did your diff break? Ive only broken one and only heard of one other breaking on a syty that wasnt a max hp build. The 7 5/8" rear is tougher than most ppl think to a point so if you dont have a max hp build or beat the truck constantly then the stock rear will prolly live a suprisingly long time.

Tried to do a search but got the below statement when I tried to view anything other than the first page that came up.. Maybe the search function is hosed or maybe the info is gone for good.. Dunno but Id def save the info if someone will post it.

There was a fella that had prolly two pages written up on here a while back about what year trucks to scope out in the bone yard. He had all kinda part numbers, which parts you need, how he did his swap, etc.. It was one of the most informative posts that Ive seen in eons concerning a part swap.

DAMN... I wish I could find it.

Oh, let me clarify with this statement:

I found a "source" for an Extreme rear end for $350. I dont want to pay for freight if I dont need too. So if the dude is willing to take off the rear disc setup for me, then that's all I really want.

That is, unless you guys tell me it would be worth it for the rear end as well. Then maybe I could get ballsy are try a 4-link out or something with the Extreme rear end.

Here is the post I used for reference:
http://syty.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=16137&highlight=

From tloof : "Since you are converting an early model 7 5/8" housing with drum brakes, the '98 up 2WD disk setup works best (not the 4WD version). It is all a bolt-on" Extremes are 2wd with rear discs so Im all set, rigtht?

So hell yeah I want to do a cheapo brake conversion in the rear....but if the rear just drops in...why not? It's a bit beefier and then I dont have to muck about with removing the drums and putting the discs into place...and have a spare for trying out a goofy suspension just for fun.

Thanks guys,
Seth.

Specs I can find on the Extreme rear end:

1) 7 1/2" ring gear
2) 3.42 ratio non-posi
3) 54" disc to disc and 39" center of spring mount to mount

Stock rear end:

1) 7 5/8"
2) 3.42 ratio (I admit I dont know what kind of differential ours is, Im inclined to think we would also have a posi rear)
3) do I have to get the tape measure out or does someone know?

I can have an LT1 equiped '97 Trans AM rear end for $250.00. It is 4.11 posi with discs. Just to give you an idea of the value of a good rear end. The Extreme has discs? Since when? It will be 4 inches to short, 2" on each side. Which, really, isn't that big of a deal since the SyTy stock rear is allready 4" too short to use the same rims all the way around. A ZR2 rear end would make the best swap. Bigger, stronger, posi, disc breaks, and the 4" longer would mean that you could finally buy a set of FWD rims that work on all 4 corners with no different offset of spacers needed. And if it just happens to be 4.11, then I'd rather swap the front and make them 4.11 to. Just watch you don't red line it before the end of the QM. It should be easy to adjust the ECM for that gearing ratio to shift properly with an aftermarket chip. Plus better gears mean you can run some 18's with a little more tire sidewall for a softer ride than trying to stay within the 245/50ZR16's height.
