Removing the front diff?

Ok so I found a problem with the LS motor where I need to get the oilpan off.

What do you think? Should I remove the engine, or pull the front diff?

How hard is it to remove the diff? Anyone done this before?

Thanks,

Re: Removing the front diff?

I pulled the front diff out of my 4X4 S10 to get the oil pan off. It was much easier than removing the engine. With the diff out of the way I had total access to the bottom of the engine.

drop the front diff. If you never had it out before, it might be a good time to take it out, just for kicks and giggles and to clean some frame area that's never been touched since day one.

I pulled the front diff once. What a PITA...

Do a search on it -some guys found a good technique.

I've read that people "lower" the front diff. Is that possible to get it down, or swiveled away like 1 inch so it gives me access to the two bolts I need to get to?

How hard is that?

Re: Removing the front diff?

i took out my front differential was not very hard to do just unbolted the prop shaft the en unbolted the two shafts and then the rear mount bent that u shaped mount on the rear out of the way don't bend it too much of the weld will break then unbolted the upper mount then separated the shafts from where they bolted up with a small crow bar then i took some ratchet straps and put em around each end and ratcheted em a little tight to compress the shafts inward then crawled under (it was supported on jack stands) and started to wiggle the drivers side first and then gravity did the rest it fell right on to my chest then i changed my motor mounts and had my wife help me reinstall put it on a jack and had her jack it back up for me while i was under guideing it in i put in the passenger side first and bolted it all back up ... not too hard

If you don't bend or cut anything, I would rather pull the motor than the front differential.

Re: Removing the front diff?

ok thanks everyone.

I did some digging through the posts about it and I decided to pull the motor. At least I know how to do that reliably considering how much I've done it so far. It just sucks having to disassemble everything when I got it all together ready to start the engine. :(
