Guys I have a 4.3 short block I purchased a couple of years ago from another Typhoon. I got a quote from AES in Elk Grove Village in Il. for $1,909.95. They said they are rebuilding another Typhoon motor now and wonder if it is anyone on here. Here is a break down so please let me know what you think.

-Install Steel Main Cap (each) qty2, 130.00 total- 260.00
-Align Hone Mains------------------------------------------190.00
-Square Deck Block V6/ V8-------------------------------190.00
-Bore Cylinder (each) qty6, 20.00-----------------------120.00
-Hone Cylinder w/ stress plate (each) 6-----------------150.00
-Prep Block for Assembly-----------------------------------140.00
-Balance Rotating Assembly- Competition-------------315.00
-Polish Crankshaft-----------------------------------------------60.00
-Assembly Short Block- Competition---------------------465.00
-Shop Supplies--------------------------------------------------19.95
-tax--------------------------------------------------------------------1.80
-----------------------
1,909.95

I would supply my own parts.

Thanks

Re: Short Block rebuild quote

That seems to be a pretty decent price. I wish I could find a good shop out here.

Re: Short Block rebuild quote

At some risk but since you asked...

Some of this may be part of the assembly cost.

I don't see main and rod bearings or rings. If it were me I'd use King bearings and Total Seal rings (file fit). Personal choice though. I like the Kings because they have a 3/4 grove, Provides more oil to the rods.

Also don't see cam bearings. HD bearings are available I think.

Who's doing the rods (recondition and balance) and pistons (balance)?

ARP studs for the mains would be nice.

If it's a "race" build, cam will need to be degree'd. Sprockets and chain?

Lifters? Stock should be fine.

All my :2cents: don't forget.

I agree with Dave, assemble your own engine. I fell victim of them assembling the bottom end and the bearings went out in less than 200 miles. I replaced them and I have a couple thousand HARD miles on the motor and it's really strong still.

I would assemble the shortblock yourself if possible. Take your time and let the internet be your knowledge if needed.

Re: Short Block rebuild quote

Sean, here is what I spent on my motor rebuild. I got the pistons used (JE extreme duty), and that is why they are so cheap. The line hone cost is included in the assemble cost. I am not an experienced engine assembler, so I did not feel comfortable assembling the engine my self. I have a little different attitude than some in the fact that I would rather pay someone to do work that I am not totally competent in. One thing I would suggest is try to build a good relationship with the head guy at the machine shop, and check in often. Do get involved in your rebuild as much as possible.

arp bolts 75
pistons 400
rings 100
rods 350
four bolt main caps 230
bore 30 over 100
line hone 0
modify for four bolt mains 200
assemble 500
clearance for rods 75
bearings 100
flex plate 100
balancer 170
oil pum and stud 150
turn crank 150
clean 45
balance 250
rebuild gaskets 110
head gasket 200

3280 total cost

Re: Short Block rebuild quote

Thanks guys for the feedback. I'm not set on a shop as of yet. That was the first shop I called being that I heard of others I know that have went there and they advertise at my track. I will ask those questions on how in depth they go as far as checking bearings and to clearance the rods.

I did take a Engine rebuild class about 2 years ago and not sure if I would totally feel comfortable assembling it. I think once it's at the shop might as well let them do it "if they check it all thoroughly"

I'm going to start collecting parts like the 4 bolt caps and Rods in the mean time and look for other shops. I still have other winter projects I have to get finished first. Just thought I'd get some opinions on that quote and more knowledge so that the next time I call someone I can explain more.

Thanks

I've heard good and bad about that place. What about the place Jesse took his?

Sean,

FX engines in Mokena is very reputable. He builds or used to build motors for Rad Rides by Troy. In fact, that is who recommended them. He actually has a few 4.3s in his shop and quoted me a rebuild cost very close to the randy merritt quote above. Ask him for a quote and then ask him if he'll do a discount if he does another (mine). I keep going back and forth on what I want to do.....

I haven't got a good quote yet since there buying all the parts. When I first called it was roughly 1500 for all the machining, boring, magnafluxing and filling.
