Silver Corvette Z06 vs. Syclone

So I'm cruising with my friend Adam, both of us in our Syclones when the night has been real dull and we are about ready to turn in and cut our losses. Adam told me about this silver Z06 he raced from a roll before.. Now I have some type of F-Body, Corvette, and Mustang repellent on my Syclone and it is extremely potent - I haven't had a race with any of the aforementioned in about 2 or 3 months, so when I saw the silver Z06 heading the other way, I knew I had to pursue him if I wanted any races tonight.

Better yet, he gets a red light and we are gaining. We follow him and he takes off by himself towards the industrial park where mono-e-mono matches are held.. We set it up and Adam is gonna flag. The Vette guys say they are new to racing and weren't sure how to start, which seemed a little funny to me. They also didn't want to take it too long or go too fast so I said till 60 or so. Adam drops his hands. I launch with 1 inch vacuum and BLOW THE DOORS OFF the Z06!! I hit 40.. 60.. the guy is nowhere to be seen and I'm trying to find where he is while watching the road. Finally I can tell he is in my blind spot and as I hit 80 he is approaching REAL FAST and he passes me about 1 foot and I let off. I could tell he would wax me in the 1/4 mi by a few tenths.

He said he isn't used to launching the car yet and hasn't ran it or modified it but was gonna go to the strip tomorrow. They complimented my truck a bunch of times and were really gracious. I would like to hear how it runs at the strip, I also wonder how my truck would have done if I had good tires and launched at 5+ PSI.

We went back out onto the street and did a few more stoplight matches and I beat them pretty handily. The fact of the matter was that these guys were not going to touch me on the street unless the race got out of hand and up to high speeds. One time I stomped it from about a 3mph roll after the light changed and we were dead even through his 1st and 2nd then halfway through his 3rd he tore past me and was gone... I was pleased that I lasted that long anyway.

So after all this I was pretty confident about my AWD and beating virtually any fast car off the line on the street. I thought these Z06s were supposed to be "SO FAST" but my truck didn't have much trouble on the street. They seemed only a little faster than the LS1s. But to this car's credit, the guys did seem like they weren't real experienced with drag racing their Vette yet.

Anyway we were hanging with this guy again when suddenly we are at another stoplight and the BLACK VIPER is on the opposing lane and he tears away at the green!! I think to myself "Holy shit, a Z06 vs Viper, what a matchup that would be!" and apparently the Z06 thought the same because he pulled in front of me and did an illegal U-turn to pursue the Viper and of course me and Adam followed suit!! Some cars are just worth it. Unfortunately that race will have to wait for another day, because we got the light and the Viper was nowhere to be seen. Oh well, it was the same Viper I tried racing a week ago and he didn't bite, maybe he wouldn't have even bit against the Z06. However, I tend to think he would have this time...

Just got my first ride in an '01 ZO6 tonight. My bud bought it a few weeks ago and showed up about an hour ago. Other than it being kind of tough to launch, with wheelhop I must say, that SOB plain TAKES OFF! In no time he's in 3rd gear and the speedo is swingin' past 80mph! As with just about everything on the street, as long as the race isn't too long, a healthy Sy/Ty should take them. As far as a full 1/4 mile though, a stock Sy/Ty doesn't have much chance against the ZO6. That car ROCKS!

Hey hamrhead, by any chance have you rode in a new LS1? If so, how would you say it compares to the Z06? Thanks.

Tooky,

The new LS1 car dynos at around 310 rwhp, the LS6 is dynoing at about 360. There is quite a bit of diffence. The vette weights 3115 pounds while the Fbody is in the 3400 range.

LS1s are quick, if you look at stock trap speeds you can tell they are strong but as we all know they don't hook. Stock suspension LS1s on street tires pull 2.0 short times at best. Advantage Syty.

I have always said that regardless of 1/4 mile times, the Syclone is the ultimate street racing machine. Usually most street races are not 1/4 mile but are stop light to stop light. Advantage SyTy.

Now, I just need to get mine out of the garage more often.

1FSTSIX- 405 is GM's claimed crank hp. The car is dynoing anywhere from 360-380 to the rear wheels. Figure in drivetrain loss and you have well over their claimed 405.

Nice one Tooky.

"One time I stomped it from about a 3mph roll after the light changed and we were dead even through his 1st and 2nd then halfway through his 3rd he tore past me and was gone..."

This was the same thing that happened to me when I raced a Z06 with a shitty running Sy. I never boosted at the line correctly and basically we just both rolled on from a standstill. I was dead even with him in first and second but when he shifted to 3rd, he started walking away from me. I also had a passenger and he did not - probably didn't make much of a difference. Next time, I'll be building 10psi before the light turns green. Those cars are wicked fast out of the box!

Just think spend about a grand for tires and a 150 shot and you have a solid 11 second car. You've gotta love that. I was thinking of trading my SS in on one when I sell the Cobra.

Yeah Tooky. My bud had a '98 6 speed Vette that he just sold about 1 month before he picked up this ZO6. I never would have thought that 40hp (345 vs 385) could make that much difference! I believe the ZO6's have lower gears, so that is part of it too. But DAMN, the car just flies! To me, the acceleration borders on violent, and that's definitely a good thing!

Tooky - the Z06's are SO FAST...with a good driver you will be seeing tailights before you see 60mph...just FYI...

The 03 numbers are up in the air. I don't think they are going to change them. It was something they almost incorporated into the 01 but felt it was not a proven path. Instead of putting together something that they were not absolutely sure would work, they waited til 02.

I love the Z. It gets stronger every day. 02s have a few more ponies.

There is a local guy who has a new c5 and just bought his wife a ws6 TA. Both 6 speed and stock. Took them both to Wilkesboro Dragstrip 1/8th mile on the same night. Consistantly ran about 1 tenth quicker in the TA. He knows how to drive too. Sold the c5 shortly after.

In an interview with Business Week, Bob Lutz said that he wasn't looking for more power in the '03 Corvette. Instead he wants to lighten the car. He wasn't talking about the Z06 specifically, but some of the lightening will undoubtedly have an impact.
