Two words- yes

Thats a hell of a deal. I have a 3/4 ton truck with a 6 liter/4l80 and I have had many thoughts about stealing the drive train out for a swap.

For $1800.00 it is a steal. You can buy it and think about it more if you need to.

my buddy is swapping one of these in his Ford Ranger but he has a standalone wiring from Turnkey . It took us five minuets to hook everything up correctly but he is going on a turbo 400 trans so no wire there but he got it all for 2000 bucks no trans, just computer wiring and complete motor

IM still kicking myself.. A local guy here in phx was selling a working order 6.0 out of a HD and the 4l80 for 1200 bucks, i was 30 mins to late and it was bought out from underneath me. That woulda been a new engine for the dime and a new trans for the ty... but.... *sigh*

The only thing I'll mention is that motor is an iron head motor. In '01, the MUCH more desirable alum heads came out. But, I'd say for $1800 complete isn't too bad. Would be nice to be able to make it run, but with no starter or alternator, it'll be tough to do much inspection on it.

Go for it! I posted it because it is a damn good deal. No real intention for me to go v8, but had I run into something like this early in my build, I might have.

So what are the engine power specs? I am guessing its not an ls2 based 6.0 right? ---

Thanks....I've contacted him and am just waiting on his reply. I'm not doing the v8 thing either. I'm just going to pick it up to build the tranny for the Syclone and I want the short block to build the blown 408 for my HD. That way I can just do a weekend swap on the HD when it's done. So it's actually serving two needs.

A Lq4 is rated at 300 to 325hp depending upon year and chassis it was installed in.

A 2000 Pickup application should be rated at 300hp. Later pickups bumped it to 325 (mostly due to more aggressive tune and less restrictive intake systems (for noise)). Vans and SUV's were still rated at 300.

The LS2, LS1, and LQ4 engines are in the same family of LSx platform engines (along with a bunch of other RPO coded motors). The LS2 calls out a specific engine, which happens to be a 6.0L alum block Gen IV small block. The LQ4 on the other hand is an iron block 6.0L (with alum heads for all engines after 2000) and will either be a Gen III or Gen IV depending upon year of production. Differences between Gen III and IV are fairly subtle, but include different crank sensor wheels (24 vs 58 teeth) and different cam sensor locations (rear of motor vs front cover).

So, it's sort of a LS2 based engine, but not exactly.

317 heads (alum. 6.0L) can be had complete in usable condition for around $250, so it wouldn't be that expenssive to swap.

No those aren't the LS2. Truck motors are iron block, lower HP.
LS2's are alum. block, and found in TBSS. GTO, and, SSR but not in the Silverado SS which is 360HP 6.0 engine.

Re: So should I swap in a V8 too?

I am dropping either a hopped up 5.3 or 6.0 in my Sy. They are getting crazy power out of these 5.3 from the yard with just adding a cam. I am sick of fighting the bugs in the engine swap that we just did. So I will be have a full Sy engine and a blown one for sale sometime within the next few weeks.

Being based on the same platform, that means an LSx head should mate up with the iron LQ4 block?

See, the problem with that statement is that not ALL truck motors are iron blocks....

The new L92 motors are alum block 6.2's (and rated for 403hp), and are GEN IV (LS2 style) architecture with the cam sensor up front and the 58 tooth crank wheel (vs the GEN III style with the rear mount cam sensor and 24 tooth crank wheel).

And there have been other alum block truck motors in the past. There was an alum 5.3 used in alot of pickups (mostly extended or crew cabs) and some suv's (I think it's RPO L33, but can't swear to it).

The only motors that are LS2's are the actual LS2's (from the applications you stated). But there are an awful lot of other LSx variants that use the same architecture (either GEN III or GEN IV), and most of their RPO codes don't have S for the second digit (like LQ4, L92, L76, L33, etc).

Affirmative. All of the LSx heads interchange. And before you start looking for LS7 heads to put on your LQ4, just note that some heads require different intake manifolds.

LS7 heads requires an LS7 intake. L92 heads require a compatible intake (L92 intake / L76 intake / or aftermarket L92 type intake). Most of the other cylinder heads use the common cathedral intake port configuration (used on the LS1, LS6 & big ugly truck style intakes).

Re: So should I swap in a V8 too?

Looks like a 5.3 liter cover on the motor. The 6.0's have a round like cover. They could of just swapped it out.

All Gen III truck V8's in 99-00 had the more squared engine cover. 01-06's were the rounded ones. It didn't matter what size engine it was, unless its an LQ9 which would have a 3-piece cover that comes down and covers the rail, coils etc. This is a cast iron headed LQ4 (the only Gen III/IV engine to get cast iron heads) so that makes it from 99-00.
