stall driveability

How would the driveability change if I were to put a 2800ish stall in? Would this affect the reliabilty of the trans? Its a stock motor, stock manifold, ultimate chip, pte51. I wont be racing the thing but its a dog around town. It starts making boost and pulling in the 3k range. I dont want something that slams me around.

Re: stall driveability

you'll need an aux trans cooler, biggest you can fit, to help keep the heat out and probably get a lockup convertor

Depends on what you get ... the 11-12" variety is usually fairly tame. You won't even notice it driving around.

The 9" and 9/11 and 10/11 hybrids are a bit more noticeable, however.

As others have suggested, get a big trans cooler.

there will be a change. will it slam you around? no... in fact its more sluggish when driving casually.

i have a 3000 and drive mine almost daily.

DO NOT get a hughes converter.

Re: stall driveability

I guess what I'm asking is, does it hit hard EVERY time you leave a light? I could understand brake boosting to hit the converter. But what about just average everyday, I care about my trans, driving?

Tooky

Serious about performance
Re: stall driveability

It all depends on the converter!! Some converters are made like SHIT, loose as hell, a total mismatch for our high torque application... Some are built well with good driveability but still loose enough to spool the turbo easily. A real crap shoot if you don't know what you're getting yourself into!

If you have never driven a high stall, at part throttle cruising around town, it makes the gas pedal feel "mushy" and the tach feels "floaty", like you give it a little gas and the truck doesnt respond. You give it a lot of gas and it responds quicker than a stock converter. If that makes any sense..

I was VERY disappointed when I got my first taste of a high stall converter.. Everyone hypes it up like it's a silver bullet, but what they don't tell you are all these trade-offs that come with a high stall converter. Come to think of it, almost every mod I've done has been like that (except the BoostValve and SMC alcohol injection which did deliver 100% of their promises.)
