Stereo Install Pics Wanted

I was wondering anyone has had a broken factory CD player. If so, is it worth fixing, or should I just buy a nice aftermarket CD player? I wanted to stay with the stock look, but not if it would bee too much trouble. I am also looking to replace the stock speakers and maybe get a box with two 10"s in the back. I may want to remove the spare tire and mount the subs in the sides facing each other, but I want it to be concealed and protected from things in the back. If anyone has any suggestions, let me know.

I don't have any pics as I'm still planning my system, but here's a few ideas that I came up with and figure I'd share.

First off, I didn't want to cut up the car at all, and if I did, it would have to be minimal. Being that I can get the subs, amps, processors, and wires for cheap, I figured I'd go with the following:

4 12's or 15's in a fiberglass enclosure that are "swirled" around a center pod in the back hatch. In the center of that pod of subs would be a pod of dry ice, a humidifier, or a smoke machine unit. Using a series of fans, a lot of tuning, I will have a simulated tornado in the center of the subs go up to the roof, exhausting to the exterior of the vehicle. Then, with fiber optic cables, I will run the tips to the surface of that fiberglass top of the enclosure. The base would be an "instant on, fade out" function of a blue color, simulating the rain. By mounting shock sensors in the enclosure (which I get for cheap too since DEI owns PPI) that would be hooked up to a switch, and then to strobe lights mounted at the top of the tornado as well under the truck. There would be a smoke machine added underneath the vehicle, or a humidifier (haven't experimented yet) and when I hit the switch, the strobes would be run by the shock sensor. So when I play some cheesy "Thunderstorm in the forest" CD, then when the thunder crashes, it would trigger the shock sensors, thereby triggering the strobes to simulate lightning.......accenting and showing the tornado. The smoke under the truck would catch the strobe as well, giving the impression of the truck in a cloud. The amps will be mounted in plexiglass enclosures filled with mineral oil, submerging the amps, with airstones showing the amps to be "drowning" having my own personal natural disaster in my truck, that under normal circumstances would just look like 4 subs during the day.

This would be a minimal amount of cutting to the vehicle, if any.

What do you guys think?

Wabbit, unbelievable install, but is it just the pic or is your interior really THAT much lighter than mine? My carpeting and inner tailgate are very dark grey, yours loks real light. Nice truck tho.

The gas tank on the 4 doors is the same as the Ty. I lowered my tank 3 inches to mount my metal tray there. The tank was visable from behind and that bug the hell out of me so I got a custom gas tank made that mounts under the driver side seating. It's a smaller 16 gallon tank but that doesn't bother me too much.

My interior is factory GM grey, but my camera does make everything lighter.

carnut, I would try to find another factory CD player. They work really well and never get stolen. Just use a good line level convertor.

Dave....just curious,

You say there's no money in building custom boxes (and I agree) I know they take a lot of time and cussing, but those sub enclosures are awesome. I just want something of that nature for the pass side only and have been looking at stuff like Thunderforms for other vehicles to try to make look decent in the Ty with little luck.

Just for kicks and giggles, how much would it cost to talk you into duplicating one of your boxes for a Ty? Maybe if you had 10+ others at the same time? Just asking...I figure the worst you could do is laugh hysterically and ignore the post.

Scoobygang, I've been asked before to do something like that for other people. The thing with me is if I have time I would do it. I wouldn't even charge you. Just food and supplies. Like I said I don't do this for a living, What I do do for a living pays me very well so I don't need extra money so therefore it wouldn't bother me to do it for no money. I just love working with my hands. Time is the problem for me.

I did send one person to a local shop to get a quote before. (Shop is my friends and he's seen my truck) He told him that they couldn't do what I did for some reason but they can do something close for about $2,500. I think that's a little steep.. It took me about 50 hours total to make those boxes. That's nothing compared to other stuff I've done to that truck.

If you like I will post some pics of me working on the boxes. The boxes look a lot better than I do. *lol*

Yes, please post.

Not sure if it would be of interest, but we could take a mold from them and have them done in glass or I coudl even vacuum form them in ABS plastic...

Just an idea.

I do want to see more pics of everything you did.

i can vouch for the work jason does. he can do a custom box, and get the most out of any system you decide to put in it. this BMW truck he did, all i can say is fuck. so clean of an install, and sounded so clear.

Dave,

Thanks for the info, looks like I'll go back to the drawing board. I knew those things were nice, but 50 hours? SOB! Shop wants $2,500?....seems okay for someone with more dollars than sense.

I would be interested in a link to some of your install pics...maybe I'll get inspired to spend some free time getting my hands dirty.

I personally am in a pinch, I don't know where to go or what to do with my setup.

Right now it's 2 15" Cerwin-Vega Strokers being powered by 2 Infinity Beta Digital 300 1000x1 amps. My dad and I built the box in about 15-20 hours time, and it's well built as anything but...how should I say...ugly. It's a fuckin BOX, 3.5 cu.ft., ported, per sub. Subs are angled facing toward rear window, with a low amp rack. The whole thing is wrapped in this ugly brown leather that looked black under the flourescent lights of the cloth place.

I want a custom installation. I want to keep the air space for the subs, and the spare tire in place, but I want a custom, ultra clean install taking up the entire back of the truck. Anyone know where I can go to have this done in the north jersey area without spending like $2000??? if you want i can take pics of the current setup so you get an idea how utilitarian this thing is. I am also going to want to flush mount the top of the PS2 and the changer somewhere in the back so they don't stick out but you can easily change DVDs/Games/CDs.

And by the way, NASTE guys who were at Hooters (especially Mike B), I knew the system sounded weird. Come to find the positive wire between the terminal cup and sub came off so only one of em was working!

Damn, one Cerwin Vega 15" Stroker was still enough to pound. Your shit's pretty loud Mike.

I gotta bring this post back. I'd still like to see some pics of the building of those boxes and the install. I can provide hosting space if needed.

Also, I'm still VERY interested in paying for a set of boxes just like that. I've always had that idea in my head, and I loved it even more as soon as I saw that pic.

Hook it up!
