Stock Turbo, how fast?

So most people know Jeremy was able to run 11.9's with a stock turbo, bone stock motor.

We were just wondering, forget motor "rules" (well lets assume a stock block, GM heads). How fast do people think a stock turbo can go?

Cam changes, head change, porting, etc all allowed. Basically a stock weight truck, not a gutted hulk.

Does it make sense no, just wondering is all.

Re: Stock Turbo, how fast?

Holy cow Jeff. You been spying on me? I have been spending time with a certain engineer (was there late yesterday as a matter of fact) who works for a little place here in CT that makes jet engines (well maybe not so little - lol). He is a compressor engineer. We will make an attempt to "reinvent the wheel" (don't know if pun was intended) so to speak and increase the efficiency of the stock unit. If we do come up with something, will this disqualify me from any future Nats racing pure stock class?

On your op question, based on what we have come up with so far, (and ideas I have for suspension tuning) I don't think low 11's are impossible.

Re: Stock Turbo, how fast?

IMO jeremy's turbo isnt stock, modified stock turbo i would call it

I would think 11.40'-50's depending on a lot of other factors into it.

Re: Stock Turbo, how fast?

Exhaust housing was ported, otherwise its a bone stock turbo. Guess to me not much different than someone that does a cold air kit, ported intercooler, bigger exhaust, etc.

I somewhat remember a dude at Chicago Nats(?) with a lightened Syclone, mild motor work, and stock turbo running 11.4's - 11.5's...

Wouldn't it be something if a stock turbo truck could hit high-10's?

Good luck man!

Re: Stock Turbo, how fast?

I thought that guy Chuck Blossom stock turbo truck ran 11.4 w/an Accell DFI installed?

TwinTurboV8Ty ,did you take pics of that ported turbine housing? Pics of the open dump pipe also?

My stock turbo record was 12.29,w/no meth & no custom tuning on pump gas.I would think w/ported heads, suspension work, tuning, low low 11's,drop the weight 10.s

Bob Lambeck 199? Camaro has run 9.8's w/one of those "300 HP SBC"

10.25 compression,stock,ported 041 heads IIRC ,engine made 550 hp.
The car would just hook & go,big wheelie,

The class had to run stock cc volume heads, stock compression,,recontouring of the heads is allowed, this is where my friends cyl head shop became involved;)
The car ran in the 10. something class, but just goes to show,if you can get it to hook the ET's will be low.
I forgot what the weight for the class was, but, the Camaro was not a feather weight. 3000+
IIRC,3400 LBS?

Don't forget the 20' + downhill grade to the track you made the pass at. Or your routing of IC coolant through the AC to cool it down. Or the carncer causing mixture in your gas tank.;)

Yes Blossom has went a 11.48 with a NHRA Stock legal syclone. Camshaft was allowed to be .470 lift E/I and no duration limit, KB headers, 14cm exhaust housing, Stand alone accell DFI, & Weight reduction(34XX LBS MIN WEIGHT) were some mods that I know of.

My 11.94 pass was made using Syty Nationals rules. There are pictures out there of the exhaust housing mods. Anybody running a JSM downpipe has same thing done to them. Mainly the were for better boost control with the elevated boost levels I was running 25psi +.:2cents:

Re: Stock Turbo, how fast?

There was a *much* better run than 11.48 in Chuck's truck.
Running too fast in the stock classes will get you an automatic teardown, so the full limits weren't pushed.

Using a 14cm2 housing would open up a lot... how much modification to the stock turbo before it's not stock.

On a lightweight, high cr motor, well-flowing motor... High 10s aren't crazy.

If we're talking spray, you could do even more.

I guess Pomona Ca ET's don't count?
Everyone says running the hoses for the intercooler through the heater core does not help one bit.
I think all gas is cancer causing ,even the 91 octane Exxon I ran will cause cancer.

Never seen a posted pic of your extensively ported out turbine housing that Jeff spent a lot of time porting on.
He said he did more than just cut the back open for a DP

Jeff didn't do it. I did.

Extensive porting nope. 1st oneCut out the back section to match DP and cut down on the turns the exhaust leaving the WG hole had to make from 3 to 1. The first one we did we also welded a SBC exhaust valve head to make the waste gate puck and hole bigger for better boost control. Leaked exhaust like a SOB:tdown:. Made it harder to build boost. 2nd one has the back section cut out to match DP and the area that bolts to the manifold blended to match. Extensive porting you betch ya.

BTW we ran 11's with both of them.........

So, who ran the fastest; with a stock turbo in a Typhoon?

Wasn't he running alcohol injection with that? Is not that considered a power adder? -or am I thinking of someone else?? :squint:
