Re: SY 2373 Ramblings

OK, some updates. I got the cam installed a few days ago. Here is a pic of work in progress:

When I went to set the lifter preload, I noticed that the rods were rubbing the bottom of the oil pan. Apparently, the machine shop that did my build just left the oil pan a little loose so the Eagle rods would not hit on two of the rods, so this had to come out. No fun.

All that work to fix this:

While I was putting the motor back together, I tried to hide as may wires as possible. Here is a pic of the Alt. wires tucked behind the fuel rail. I tried to do this with as many wires as possible.

I also went ahead and did the on the block oil filter mod that helped clean up the engine bay:

Lastly, today, I finally had a bracket made to hold the I/C tube onto the TB and avoid any future blowing off.

Re: SY 2373 Ramblings

Merry Christmas to me. I got a set of 255/40/17 Nitto NT05 tires (tread wear 200). This should help my traction problem. I also ordered a set of Caltracs yesterday. It has been a good year, so I thought I would splurge a little.

I finally got around to removing the dog mess of an alarm system and one touch down power windows. This was done on Christmas day. It is much cleaner under the dash now.

Ahhh, with good traction, maybe it would have made up for my terrible driving at the autocross. Wouldn't have killed so many cones. I am going to stick to trying to win the rental car class.

Progress from today: I received the external gated downpipe section from RPM a couple of days ago, and I went ahead and pulled my turbo today to install it. I will be buttoning it up tomorrow.

I got the turbo with external gate installed today. To answer my own questions, yes the external gate will work with the factory A/C, but you have to bend one of the lines a little bit, and no, the external gate will not clear the inner fender, it requires a little trimming. Here is a pic from the fender well.

Re: SY 2373 Ramblings

Here is my newest tinkering project, since the truck is running good and does not need much. I always like the 70's CB Honda's. I made a new seat for it and have removed the fenders and most of the bright bits, as well as tinkered a little with the mechanics. I will be removing as much of the trim, etc. as I can, but not cutting up the bike, and keeping everything in case someone wants it back to stock. It is a 1976 CB 550F Super Sport:

Re: SY 2373 Ramblings

The truck is still running great with no problems, so here are some pics of my bike project. I installed clip on handles and lowered the front about 2", pulled the headlight in about an inch or so, made a better seat, and removed the gauges and a few other things. Sorry for the poor pic quality.

This is what it looked like when I got it. I have not cut any wires or body parts during modification..

Re: SY 2373 Ramblings

A little update from the past few months. I bought a 74mm turbo to try out, and drove to the end of the driveway and down the road about 1/4 mile, then came back home and put my old turbo back on. My 2800 stall converter would build zero boost for a boost launch, and the turbo didn't even come alive till second gear. I did some more research on the turbo I have, and I am 99% sure it is a PTE63, and not a Garrett GT35R, like I was told when I bought the truck. No problem, as the turbo works great.

While I was swapping the turbo, I decided to upgrade my FMIC to a larger size with 2-1/2" piping to replace the small intercooler I had that only had 2" piping. I must say that I think it turned out very nice, and looks like a nice clean install. I used a 700 CFM ebay intercooler from CSX racing, and I have about $300 in the whole deal, as I was able to reuse my upper intercooler to TB tube. I kept my A/C, and only had to do minimal cutting on the flat part of the core support and the inner fender to make this work. I got a junkyard grill to modify, and I guess I got lucky and got a very thin aftermarket grill that works with this intercooler. The grill is very, very tight, but it seems to work and look OK.

Everything up top looks like it did before, and I was able to keep my mechanical fan and shroud.

On a semi final note, I am pretty sure I discovered the "supercharger whine" that I have been hearing. It turns out my dist. gear was shot and gave up the ghost the other day. I had to get a tow for the first time since buying the truck over 5 years ago. I will be putting in a new dist. with a composite gear next week.

Enjoy.
