Sy 2648 breathes fire...again

Many of you know that I took a little break from my original Sy after the new motor broke several driveline components early last year. In order to stay involved in the SyTy world, I purchased another Sy from a fellow list member and long-time friend, and I've been busy getting back to basics with simple bolt-on upgrades to this "new" truck.

Well...today I went down to my warehouse to pick up a few things and I fired up old 2648. Its been nearly a year since I've even started this truck...I just cranked it without fuel until it built oil pressure, then I hit the switch to the big Weldon pump. To my amazement, it fired right up! I held it a a fast idle for a bit, and it soon settled into its lumpy 1100 rpm idle. It sounded absolutely awesome. Within a few minutes, most of the hatred I'd built up over the past year subsided...I think I finally like this truck again.

Hey Rob, thats great to hear about your truck.

I know exactly what you mean about the love/hate deal. Thats what makes these stupid canadian winters so great, by march you really end up missing your truck, by october it could rot for all I care.

What did you break on the sy anyway? Nolan said you had a pretty wizzy buildup, but didn't get into specifics. I'm just kinda curious.

Stock block & crank. Eagle rods with TRW/SpeedPro 2441 pistons, Brodix heads (ported by me), BIG cam (that explains the lumpy 1100rpm idle), 66 trim TS04 turbo, CAS dual core IC, SpeedPro/FAST engine management with 83# injectors.

It broke the flexplate on its first shakedown pass, and broke the transmission immediately after I replaced the flexplate. I parked it in the warehouse after that, and its been sitting there for almost a year.

Peter,

I'll be putting the new truck back togather this weekend...after that, removing the driveline out of my old Sy is the next priority.

I don't need no stinkin' trust fund for speed parts...I just dip into the retirement fund that I won't be needing since these trucks are going to drive me to an early grave

Ryan,

I can't even imagine taking this truck to the next level. The current round of upgrades began back in 1997...after thinking it was good-to-go early last year, I discovered I'd built a little too much motor for my driveline. And the saga continues...I better break out the checkbook before this mood wears off, because I'm sure something will happen that causes me to hate this truck again soon.

Rob, good to hear its running, thanks for helping me out with the sy. I will going to the track in a couple of weeks and try to put this thing in the 10s, with the et streets and drag radials and those light weld wheels the truck hooks so hard. i was out today and i did a 8psi launch and it was great, no spin just gone!!!!! I guess i need about 20psi to try to obtain that et? anywayi will call you a couple of days before i go if you want to come . maybe you could bring the other sy? jack

Hey Rob

I have a question about you Weldon fuep pump.
Do you have a sump in your tank or did you just have a larger line mounted next to the stock hanger assembley?

Thanks

Nolan

Rob, your truck is slow.

Why don't you bring that racetruck up to Orlando and get some of my POS?

Another couple weeks, and Tom will have his '95 TT T/A ready for ya!

You need to bring this high revving machine to our next gathering for sure. I'll tune that SpeedPro for you real good.

Hey Jack, few Q's on your setup:

1. what size ET streets you runn?

2. are you burnin out w/them to get max hook or are they holdin 8# launches cold w/o any warm up? basically, can you just roll out your driveway and stop, build boost to 8 #'s on brakes and let'er rip w/o and loose of traction?

3. what size/weight/cost/BS were your welds? they designed for street use?

4. you get my SP program I sent Rob?

5. whats your complete build? I'm curious to compare it to mine.

Thanks in advance Jack

Jack,
Yeah...let me know when you're going to Moroso. Peter could probably give you the best advice on how much boost it will take to go 10's...he's been there & done that with a truck very similar to yours.

Nolan,
I removed the pump & return line from the hanger assembly. I made a new return line out of the original pressure line ('cause its bigger), and I ran a 5/8" aluminum pick-up down through the top of the hanger assembly. I still have the stock sending unit, but I had to remount it to the new pick-up tube using hose clamps.

Christian,
LOL! Maybe I'll bring my slow truck up there...I'm installing the 20G-14cm2 and a heavy duty propshaft this weekend. If you beat the slow truck, then I'll bring out the fast one...double or nothing of course

Seriously, I want to bring the faster truck out to one of the FAST events...maybe sometime later this year. I'm really pretty impressed with some of the trucks our FAST members have built or are building. We're a very innovative group, and there are a lot of cutting edge mods & upgrades that have been developed down here. We have several trucks with "10 second potential" that are complete or nearly complete. And 12 second trucks are becoming very common.

peter, yes i can build boost to 8lbs right after it warms up a little and then just leave off the brake, i must hold the pedal down so hard to get the truck to not move but there is no wheelspin at all. its amazing really that it wont spin a lick, i can get in the ty and the 18s do nothing but spin on anything over 3lbs.last time i went to the track i had the stock wheels and tires and i did a 8lb launch thinking the track isgoing to hook so much better, well i almost hit the tree the truck spun so bad and pulled to the left but i did not want to let out if it so i kept going and only pulled a 1.89 short time and the intercooler hose came off at half track and still went 12.40 at 99mph, and that was before i did the bigger turbo , speedpro , bigger cam, weld wheels and tires, no ac now. Anyway , the build i think is identical to yours, mccoy supermotor , 72 turbo from mike, speedpro with 72lb injectors, not sure off cam specs, jerry mccoy said he uses this cam in alot of these builds, 1.5 roller rockers, 52mm throttle body, dequick intercooler, fluid damper, hartman stage 5 tranny and his converter which i can not believe the difference that this tranny is like now. night and day difference, it is so much fun to drive now, what elsedo i have umm, no ac, no heat, no windshield resovoir, no abs, battery in bed, alum. driveshaft, atrs front propshaft, rearend girdle, number 8 fuel line, 2 fuel pumps, msd. the weld wheels were 180.00 each , 16x8rears and 16x8.5 fronts because you can get 5.5 backspacing with that size and i went with 4 inch backspacing for the rear, it looks really tough. the et streets are 26x10.50 Like i said i can not believe how good it hooks up on the street , no spin at all, i am only running 15lbs of boost so what boost and fuel do you think i need to get that 10.90 pass and thanks for sending rob the program. jack ostrander

Hey Jack,

good to hear from ya. you DEFINITELY got a 10 sec potential in your Sy if its same build as mine........Anyway, before I forget, lemme ask you 7 more Q's than I'll answer yours:

1. are your Welds a "street" rim or drag only rim? which Welds are they?

2. what do the front/rear Welds weight individually and what do the ET streets weigh?

3. why did you got 16x8? I woulda thought you'd gone 17" for looks or 15" for weight reduction/tire selection

4. finally, I saw ET streets come in 11.50" width too, so why you go 10.50"? 11.50 won't fit under Sy? rim too narrow? I'm askin b/c I want order 11.50's if they'll work

5. How does sy FEEL w/this setup at higher speeds, turning, braking, handling in general? Again, I'm askin b/c I drive my Sy on street 90 % time and wannma know the trade offs of goin this setup.

6. You ever dyno Sy? who tuned it? is tunin it?

7. you weigh Sy? what it weigh w/you in it and by itself?

Now, your Q's (finally right!!!..LOL):

Heres my experience.....you'll need minimum of 20 #'s if your Sy COMPLETELY dialed in. I needed 22 #'s b/c rich, low timing, AFR conservative. After reviewin my log of run and BG's help, I'm FULLY convinced I could do it again on 20 #'s.

I also have EXACT same prob you did w/hook. I thought E-town track be BEST (right Mike l? j/k) for hook b/c VHT, its track, etc....You should see how wrong I was. I would stage and pull HARD like you towards stands, tree, etc....scary shit...Plus, if I left soft so tires wouldn't spin, I'd bog and get bad 60ft, if I left more boost, killed tires, and bad 60 ft..this was on ALL BFG DR's too...only thing that helped was heatin tires and thats ROUGH on drivetrain tranny..

I've been talkin Dean, BG, others w/fast sy/ty..and I'm convinced we need what U have now..slicks in rear and BFG DR up front....I'm VERY encouraged by your results so far and I can't wait for U make passes. I KNOW we can go .5 60ft if we can leave w/more boost..hell, DSM's guys run 1.4 60fts all day when setup properly...we need work on our suspensions too..Where are ya Mr. Dustan...

Have you played w/TCC lock up pt too? I may try lockin mine like Dig, ML, Kris, others on 1-2 shift..I tried it this year and OH BABY, Sy responded..big PUSH in 2nd

Hey, gimme your exp w/Hartmans tranny/TCC setup too as I'm buildin tranny now (not as good as yours), but I'm really curious see how it holds up to power were makin...

I'd say shoot for 1.600 60ft, hold on, and enjoy ride to 10's

Please keep log of everything so we can compare notes..boost, launch boost, etc...

You put T Brake in your tranny too? if so, gonna use it?

My goal this year is keep tunin the sucker as I got WAY more in my Sy...bout 7 more #'s boost, timing, etc...I think I can run 10.50 to 10.50 stock block/crank if I sneak up on it...

Lemme know if I can help in anyway

Rob do you have any problems with the pump air locking due tothe fact that it must suck the fuel instead of a sump set up where gravity feeds the pump?

Thanks

Nolan

Nolan,

Absolutely no problems for the past 9 years that the pump has been set-up this way. The pump itself is mounted on the frame rail, and is about even with the bottom of the tank. The truck had been sitting for almost a year, but it fired up within 2 seconds after I hit the pump switch.

BTW, I wired it with the stock fuel pump wire energizing a relay, 4 ga. pump power direct to the battery positive terminal, and 4 ga. pump ground direct to the frame rail. The cut-off switch is in the ground to the relay.

peter, the wheels are weld xp draglites they just started making them again and they do make them in 17 and 18 but you cant get et streets in over 16", so thats why i went with 16" rims plus i dont know if a 15" wheel will fit on the front with the brakes.I am going to get lighter brakes also from al dustan when hes done putting them together, hopefully they are bigger rotors also and they ffit 16" wheels or else i am screwed there.I am using your program and i have not touched anything except fuelpressure and timing and i think i got it right where it needs to be, the track will tell soon. moroso is opening today after 7 weeks of shut down so now we can make a couple passes and i will display time to bb. maybe we could start a top 100 fastest trucks with the times and mods displayed like on ls1.com?I think you would love the brian hartman tranny, and maybe be .4or.5 tenths faster with that setup. The torque converter lockup is unreal, i thought it locked up hard stock and then we did his tranny and now when it locksup it feels like the truck leaps forward 4 truck lenghs when it shifts into 2nd gear. its freeking unbelieveable, i love it! Heres a little street racing storie a couple a weeks ago. Lined up with a buddys 99 stripped formula, maybe 3000lb car hes got et streets, 6 speed 4.10 and it runs 11.80 on the motor. I have seen it do it at the track and he is spraying 125 dry kit so we line up and my friend is flaging so he knows to give me extra time to build boost, hands drop and the sy puts 4 cars on him and stays there to the end.Round 2, turn on the bottle and we stage and sy puts 4 again , i made more boost this time ,i think i did 7lb luanch and he could not run me down. everyone is like WTF , you only have a v6!!! what a gratifying feeling . The et streets are 8lbs and the wheels are 10lbs, roughly 20lbs or 30lbs less than stock each corner in the back! if you can save 100lbs of unsprung wieght that is about .3 in the quarter mile. Last time i wieghed the truck it was 3450 but still had all stock stuff, i think it will be around 3300.I have not dynoed it but was hoping it would be around 600 at 20psi. i have spent about 20 grand on parts for it , would like to see a 10.90 pass for all the time and money spent, we will see!!! jack ostrander
