Sy 354 LQ9 Turbo still AWD is running

Well, it has been over 2 years since the 4.3 lifted the head gaskets (for the last time) and i parked it and started this swap. Well on 3/6/09 I fired the new engine! This was particularly rewarding since this was the first engine that i put together completely unsupervised from picking the bare block up at the machine shop to turning the key. Thanks to my Dad for welding up my radiator, a "slightly" modified griffin, my upper charge pipe and upper radiator hose connector. Im still learing on the TIG so he was a huge help with those parts. Otherwise, its all me and im damn proud of it!

A quick rundown of this build

6.0 LQ9 block .030 over
stock crank
eagle rods
weisco pistons
comp cam (trying to find my cam card) lifters, springs etc
317 casting heads, "cleaned up" with oversize intake valves
ls1 intake
my own "custom" made exhaust manifold system
new FAST XFI/XIM management system

left overs from the 4.3 include
4l80e trans with 3500 Hughes converter with lockup
3 inch downpipe and exhaust
Turbonetics T76 Q trim ball bearing turbo

Update - here is a slide show link to my photobucket album http://s105.photobucket.com/user/500charger/slideshow/Syclone

lookin good Tom, long time no see.

what are you using for tuning?

I bought the new XFI system from FAST and am working on the tune now. Software wise it is similar to my old FAST system so ive kinda got an idea of what im doing but it will take a while to get it right.

Cool. How much boost ya gonna run? Compression ratio? Pump gas tune or E85? Spraying methanol?

Sounds like a sweet build with the 4l80. Hope it lives up to your expectations.

Right now i have the wastegate as low as it will go at 12lbs once i get it tuned in i may bump it a little but 15lbs max. I am tuning it on regular old 93 octane pump gas (of course everything is 10% ethonal around here). Compression ratio should be just around 9:1 . It has a set of 96# injectors in it so i dont think i will have a problem keeping the a/f ratios where i want them.

I dont think it will leave me disappointed. Im already thrilled with the way it has turned out. The 4.3 i took out went a best of 11.23 at like 126mph. As long as this setup can match that i will be satisfied. The main reason for the swap was the v6 kept giving me trouble, just pushing it a little too much. These motors are about the same or less cost wise to build as the 4.3 with the way parts are getting for the v6's. This motor should make the truck as fast or faster than it was without pushing on it near as hard, hopefully making it more reliable.

As far as Nats, i am totally out of the loop on that. Ill have to check out the when and where info and see what i can do. Ive never been to one so id like to make it at least once.

August 7th-9th Bowling Green KY.

You need to come bring it and race it. I know of at least 1 other ls1 powered sy that will be there.

Motor mounts?? I see your pan isn't modified at the corner near the front diff. Mine hits the diff with the TT mounts........are yours custom?

Crossover: Any pics of that routing? I didn't see any in your album.

What did you do for headers?

Looks killer. I hope to have mine looking something like that.........some day.

Re: Sy 354 LQ9 Turbo still AWD is running

I have to look at the calendar and see if we can make it down there this year.

PPI, the mounts were originally ones i got from E that i pretty much only ended up using the pad that bolts to the frame and making new risers. the pan is sooooo close to the diff I will be keeping a close eye on it to see if it is making contact.

I have pics on my phone of when i made the manifolds and crossover. I call them manifolds cause they arent really full length headers the pics will explain better. But, if guys make over 1k hp with flipped truck manifolds mine will make power just fine ;-)

Re: Sy 354 LQ9 Turbo still AWD is running

Well, I took it for a little longer drive tonight after correcting an alternator issue. Not really running hard yet, lots of tuning and it drives 100% better than it did when we left. Im going to get one or two more rides like that in, change out the break in oil and then start leaning on it a little more. We did see a max of 3lbs of boost (it spools SOOOOO much faster than the v6 i wasnt expecting it) and it felt like the v6 did at 10lbs of boost. It felt good and has me excited about its potential.

I have seen the truck in person. It is bad ass. I knew what the v6 was like and I can't wait till this is tuned. I think it will be crazy.
