Sy air scoop doodle

While stuff is apart, I was considering an air scoop install. The stock air box location is not optimal, I think. Maybe after the ABS delete, there is enough space for the air box under the hood. I drew some crude indications of how and where. Maybe somebody can do a better job.
Did this on my Android phone with index finger so excuse the mess.

Engine bay

Under the hood. Hood under bracing doesn't need to be cut.

Re: Sy air scoop doodle

Would this be a performance mod or cosmetic?
I wouldn't think that any forced air or cooling effects would be gained as it appears that the stock crossover would still be used. The air path would suggest any increase would need to come from increased pressure inside the air box which would also necessitate a rework of the PCV system. I'm sure that isn't a major concern considering the amount of modification to make this work just food for thought. As for cooling the incoming air the crossover sitting on top of the radiator kills that possibility.
As a cosmetic mod, to each his own. I like some hood scoops on performance cars however I personally think that in the case of our bricks the sleeper look serves us better. :2cents:

I believe this would improve performance. The stock crossover tube has been flow tested and it is appropriate for stock or slightly modified trucks. As for heat transfer from radiator to air traveling thru x-over tube, not an issue. It is just going too fast to act as a heat sink. The heat of the turbine would, however, heat up fresh incoming charge of air more than anything else. Cosmetically speaking, you are correct. It's a matter of opinion. I for one like out of the box thinking if it serves a purpose. It will have to be done well if one wanted to drive in the rain after this mod. Finding an air box or making one to fit would not be an issue to a skilled individual. Once the area is cleaned up(move alarm siren and re route hoses), there should be enough room under the hood for a larger than stock piece without the need to remove ABS. I'll take more pics with hood installed if and when I decide to take on this task after I cut a hole on the hood.

Re: Sy air scoop doodle

why draw warm/hot air from above to try push it below. Draw air from below and push it upwards. Put a cowl induction hood on it to take warm air from out of the engine compartment. Just my .02 cents on it.

Re: Sy air scoop doodle

Get a naca duct....like I have and am going to do.http://www.sfxperformance.com/parts/APRNACA-032026.htm

I considered these vents on certain spots on the hood positioned aesthetically. Heat is the driving forced behinds a turbo system. I'd probably never place one over the turbo for heat dissipation, over the intercooler maybe. With the exhaust, I believe containing the heat within components so it can do its job until it exits the catalytic converter would yield considerable performance benefits. Also, the under hood insulation is used to keep paint on the hood from getting baked and the hood from getting too hot to the touch. just my opinion after giving it some thought. No insulation, more heat dissipation. Not promoting removal of insulation by any means... Just an observation.

Re: Sy air scoop doodle

I have the RPM "CAI"....I am going to install the naca ducts on the hood and possibly on the fender to introduce air flow to the CAI filter and to the intercooler lines that I now run through the fender. I'm also fabricating a CAI filter box to reduce HOT under hood air .....I'll take pics as I install them also.

Ambient air is not much different above or below. I choose to have an air inlet above because of possibly having to drive over a puddle, for example. The air is not being pushed in but drawn in by the mechanics of the whole system. This is not like the radiator and the cooling fans. Open the hood, remove one end of air intake tube, start the engine, place hand over open air intake and revv engine a little. The engine is a large air pump. No need to push air in it. Any air outside the engine compartment is degrees cooler than inside at operating temperatures.

I'd like to see and read about your progress! I wish I didn't work so much sometimes to spend more time messing with my projects. Then again, I need the money to do just that.

Tell me about it....I used to have 3 days off during the week working one job...now I work two jobs...70 hours a week and my bed has turned into parts storage central. My room has a path to the bed due to all the boxes of parts and a sliver of the bed is for me when I do sleep there.hahaha I total get you man. When I get it all put together and functional I'll take alot of pics and post them for sure.

I have a cervinis dual scoop hood. I like it because it just grabs the outside air, brings it in and pushes the hot air out. The hot air that comes is VERY noticable.

Re: Sy air scoop doodle

I looked into all kinds of ducts....and decided on a naca design due to it being a low resistance design. I spose if you wanted to you could get a s10 hood from a yard an play with it alittle and go from there....I know there are tons of them out there!

Re: Sy air scoop doodle

Scoop would end up near this spot.

Under the hood to seal filter to scoop, I'll probably try these from home depot
