sy tranny shifts...normal????

Hi,

I'm relatively new to Syclones and auto trannies. I know the shift from 1st to 2nd should be firm and it is on our 91 Sy. But, should... (#1) I feel a "kinda downshift" into 1st gear as I am braking to a stop?(seems to happen as I'm slowing to about 5mph, and its kinda a mild clunk into gear as I'm coming to a stop), and (#2) is it common to feel a vibrating "slippage?" as I travel at 45-60mph and as I press the pedal mildly to moderately to downshift out of OD into 3rd?....kinda feels like a shudder.... The sy shifts firm and great 97% of the time and I'm tempted to leave it as is.... But I'm wondering if there's some easy adjustments that can be made ???? Thanks Matt

For #1, I have that too, the clunk into 1st coming to a stop, but it's only when I am driving in D.

Thanks 4 the reply...my neighbor with his vette told me the same thing...now I'm only concerned with the shudder that I get occassionally out of the tranny with pedal press downshifts........ocassionally I get a shudder or half second vibration b4 shiftdown..

My Ty does this also. When I did my rebuild, I used the Red Eagle frictions for my clutches. The overrun clutch piston in mine had blown it's seal off of one side so I never had it before. Between the Reds and the return of pressure for that piston with the new seals, my downshift in "D" is so hard the damn ABS kicks in. When I'm in OD, you can just barely feel it. The clunk is normal. Just put it in OD and you won't hardly feel it. If I remember correctly, lines pressures are raised when you are in "D" which may explain the more forceful apply of the overrun clutch piston.
Just us OD when tooling around, D for when you want boost on demand and firmer shifts(IMHO)

I believe its pretty much because of downshifting and engine breaking.

the creaks can be bushings, worn CVs, dead propshaft joints.

thanks for all the advice...now I'm just concerned about the split second "slippage or shudder" when downshifting(pressing the pedal down at 50mph) from OD to 3rd....any tips?

Thanks! Matt

Yeah, my 93 ty does that too. When Im in od and kick it down, sometimes i get a vibration for a second or so and then its gone.when I hear it, it worries me somethings gonna break.Otherwise it shifts great.I was thinking u-joints or propshaft?
Let me know if you find out anything.

I talked to Brian a few weeks ago about the same problem. Don't waste your time waiting for an answer just call him. He is great to help you. He can explain it to you. I will leave it to him to explain since he is the expert.
