The original question is a very good one, I wouldn't worry about the HP numbers worry about the Torque numbers. Think about it how often do you see a SYTY break at the top end in 3rd gear? I can't think of one, but I've seen and broken numerous launching from a standstill where torque is king. The weight issue is simple, weigh less go faster period. I'd bet Peter H's truck weighed close to 4000lbs with gas and ass  and he cracked the 10's, however, his trans is the exception to the rule he's been very lucky it never puked. I've dumped 3 trannies and I never made the power and torque he's making, until now that is  From what I've seen the stock trans is the only real weak point...once you start making 900+ LBS of torque then you can think of bigger transmissions like the 400 or 4L80...the transfer case has one of if not the best chains made, front ends rarely let go and rear ends don't either until you have a stout trans and a ton of torque....unless you're going balls or ball out  have a nice 700 built up, find the biggest trans cooler you can, and put a SPAL fan on the cooler and you should do pretty good. The rest of the drivetrain has proven pretty stout.
