Tranny Cooler

Just finished installing the cooler under my bed. I chose to pull air from the bottom because it would be too low and might hit something if it were the other way. This way it has room for the air to flow. Install went smooth and only cost $20 for the parts. Got the cooler from Summit for $160 lines and fitting's from Aeroquip $100 bucks. Everything is solid and ready to cool some fluid.

Get yourself a remote transmission filter from Summit Racing for $28.69 : http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=4479 It is already drilled and tapped for 1/8" senders and have twice the filtering for your tranny to boot. I have the TCI pan also and was going to drill and tap it but, the temps in the pan aren't what the tranny actually "sees". So, I mounted my temperature sender in the pressure line before the radiator cooler and my aux tranny cooler.

I saw this the other day when I was over at Jesse's. When he turns the damn thing on, it actually blows out from under the sides of the truck in a big way. I was very impressed. It has got to beat the heck out of the stock system that uses a small heat exchanger crammed into the end tank of the radiator.

Be careful if you mount it in your cooler line because it can inhibit flow. This was discussed several years ago on the LIST.

It sounds like the best way is to mount it into a remote filter setup the way Mike said to do. That way you don't inhibit flow and you are getting the temp of the fluid as it leaves the tranny to be filtered.
Just my 2cents based on the experience of others.

Greg, I mounted my remote tranny filter on the fenderwell where the stock battery tray used to bolt up. I have the ATR battery relocation setup BTW. It fits in there like it was made to go there. Even used the bolt that held the tray in place to mount it. Plenty of room to spin the filter on and off. Just have to remove my air filter to get to it. On a side note, I have SPA Design gauges and the temperature sender *just* cleared the hoses. I think I have less than 1/16" clearance between the sender and the lines... I have a bud with a ty and he has the Autometer gauges and there wasn't enough room to mount the sender  Gonna have to come up with a plan "B" for him. HTH

Well, I finally got the truck running and everything hooked up. Drove it around for a day and got back under to check everything out and say the fan was $@!^*. $160 bucks down the tube. Don't do the install the way I said to. There is not enough clearance. The Diff came up and hit the fan and tore it up. It needs to be mounted the other direction. Mark that up to trial and error! The tranny seems to be perfect, my TCI pan leaks. Everything seemed to work out except the fan and pan. Live and learn right?

Don't feel bad, I shelled out $230 for two machined brass barbed fittings for my IC temps cause I couldn't find the appropriate barb fittings I needed. Of course I saw them at a local hardware store a few weeks later for less than $2 a piece ... Thanks for sharing your misfortune. That blows to spent all that time and money for nothing . Your TCI pan is leaking? First time I have ever heard of a problem with it. Have a bud with a sy that had two Derales leak right out of the box before going to a TCI. Where is it leaking from? If it's at the front of the truck, did you grind the pan slightly to clear the bell housing? We had to grind some aluminum on my sy and a ty when we installed it. HTH

Bummer!
Welcome to the school of hard knocks.
I know when I get mine running I will be on pins and needles worrying about what custom thing will fail, crash or break.

Just a thought though, you could probably mount in that way (fan down), just put it back, closer to the tailgate and turn it side-ways. Of course, you need to toss the spare mounting thingy.

Any problem with mounting the filter under the truck near the cooler? Any way to use the filter and cooler w/o mounting the filter inline? Last question- do yo still use the stock in radiator cooler, or what?
Thanks

There shouldn't be any problem mounting the filter back with the cooler. Obviously clearance, obstructions and moving parts need to be considered. Besides, there is a lot more free space in the back than near the trans or in the engine bay.

Not sure what you mean about not running the filter inline?

As for running the rad cooler also, with a cooler of this size, it's probably not needed. As a side benefit of bypassing the rad cooler, your engine will run cooler on those really hot days we enjoy in CA.

The inline reference is to Blake's post a few back mentioning how the filter when mounted inline with the cooler could restrict flow . I was wondering how else to run it or should it be o.k.?

He was speaking about the temp. sending unit.
If you place a T in line and mount the sensor in it, it could protrude to much into the oil path thereby reducing flow.

If you buy a remote filter that has 2 inlets & 2 outlets, you can use one of the extra outlets for your sender and not have to worry about a flow restriction.
