Trans leak from the tq converter?

I daily drive my Ty and it has been great for a while no leaks at all. Today, I noticed some smoke, that was sweet in smell coming from the rear of the vehicle. It was actually bad enough that it was misting the whole back of the truck. Parked it at home and left it running. Looked underneath and saw a TON of red trans fluid all over the under side of the truck and on the concrete. Like anyone, I cleaned it all up, wiped everything down so I could start searching for the source.

From the puddles on the ground and the places where I wiped, it seemed apparent to be all over the front part of the trans. The pan was good, the cooler lines didn't appear to have any issues either. I then lowered the truck on the ground and immediately noticed the puddle starting to form, dripping from the torque converter cover.

So could I have a leak from there? What are the possibilities of why it would leak there?
Thx in advance.

How would I have caused this...too much fluid or is this a common problem?
I do drive it a lot and if I'm honest, probably harder than I should. So with this, I'm wondering, simply because I fear fixing it and having to do it all over again later.

Thinking back to when this happened. I did have the truck in Drive and not Over Drive, and was going pretty fast, maybe 75-80. Could that have caused enough pressure to pop out the seal? If so, dang that's a painful mistake.

one of the trans lines-they leak faster
and also could be pump seal

I checked the lines, can't find any leak from one of them.
If its the front pump seal, can I see it by taking off the inspection cover? Better yet, can I tap it back in, if its out, or do I have to replace it?

no, trans will need to come out, converter needs to come off, there is typically a cage over the seal as well.

Awesome, welp, I'm going have to finish the motor on my Vette and kick that whole mess out of my garage, cause I'm not pulling the trans in the driveway.

UNLESS YOU can check them under pressure- like in drive you may not see it leak.
if its all over the back window while casually driving 45-50 short trips- its the lines

Welp, I thoroughly inspected the leak. It is with certainty the front pump seal.
I'd like to tackle the repair myself, but with my garage full of my other project car I have to succumb to a trans shop. Anyone know of a good transmission shop near Ft Myers that has removed a trans out of a SyTy before? I'll have to borrow a trailer or have it towed, Uhg.

Re: Trans leak from the tq converter?

I didn't have to even change the title. The leak is actually from the torque converter.

A couple of weeks ago I brought the Ty to Lee County Transmissions. They were about the only ones I called that knew what a Typhoon was so I decided to go with them after reading some reviews.

They took out the trans and replaced all the seals including the front pump seal as that was the most likely cause of the leak. Once the trans was back in they took it out for a couple of test drives to verify the leak was fixed. On the second test drive, by the owner, he took it for a longer test drive, and when he got back, found that the converter was leaking. He said when it got warm it must leak. So they are going to pull the trans again and are awaiting my contact for a new converter.

The owner said that it shifted hard and everything is working well except the leak. The converter that's in it now is a 9-11. I had to call the previous owner and verify.

Now my question is, should I get another 9-11 converter or is there a different option that may be better?

The truck is pretty well built. The trans is race built (previous owner stated). It has some upgrades like: ATR headers, precision turbo, walbro pump, ATR 3' exhaust, old radar style chip. I think that's about it for performance mods. Its last 1/8th mile run it ran a 7.8. So, I basically want a converter that's going to keep me in that same range or better. Specifically....I really don't want one that will leak!...but I do understand that that is really rare. The trans guy said its about the second or third time he's seen it.

Getting a little sticker shock checking out a new 9-11 converter from RPM. Can I just have the converter rebuilt? who to go to?

There is/was a Circle D 2800 stall for sale in the classifieds... Probably what you are after.

I have a brand new, never run (was installed) TCS Billet 9/11 3000 Stall I was thinking about selling, I actually have one person that called dibs on it if I do, so I will need to check with them first, but if youre interested I will find out.

I am interested Captain. It may be the best way to get my Ty going, rather than sitting and waiting on a rebuild.
Trans shop is going to pull the old converter out today and see what its condition is.

Random question but do you feel that the 2800 stall is streetable? Since you DD your truck is it at that hot rod stage or do you feel like that stall is acceptable for daily usage?

To me the 2800 stall is completely streetable as a DD. I rarely even notice that its different from other vehicles I have. The shifts are a little more crisp than smooth, but I like it that way. I couldn't really tell you if the tc is slipping a lot though, because I've never logged the truck or been in anyone else's to know how it feels in comparison.
