It doesn't look all that sloppy. But since you have the case out and split, why not replace it and that way it's good for as long as you will probably own your sy.

dont forget, with the case open the two shafts will want to pull together and make the chain act as if it has more slack. spread the shafts apart the same distance as if the case was intact then check chain slack....

Is there a defined amount of slack before a chain should be replaced? I was talking with some other members about this and there we didn't come up with anything.

You can check deflection like the manual states. Hold the chain in your hand and see how much deflection you get. I cant remember the spec
