Ty Zero tow rating / I call BS = noob question

ive got an idea to please all parties. get your self an early 90's Bravada, add a Vortech supercharger or turbocharger setup, or do some hot-rodding. you still have the AWD and the lux interior, but you can still tow and yet have fun. i think the main thing GM is concerned about is tonge weight on the back of the vehicle. another reason why the Bravadas are nice is that they are more of a street cruiser with the more sublte ground effects and appearance. heck, stick some Ty bodywork and decals on it, some interior tweaks and you have a Ty that can be a stoplight warrior and a weekend tow vehicle. :2cents:

GM determines towing capability based on several tests:
- Must be able to pull a trailer east from Davis Dam, Lauchlin, NV at 35 mph without boiling radiator, overheating the engine oil, tranny fluid.axle lub, power steering fluid or damaging the vehicle
-Ditto for I15 Baker Hill at Bakersfield

In addition braking, tongue load and availability of a trailer hitch that doesn't compromise rear crashworthiness must also be considered.

I suspect a Sy/Ty would very easily get into uncontrolled detonation on a long pull in 100 deg. weather, a big No No

Does anyone have a pic of sticker location on the rear hatch of the Ty saying that it is not for towing a trailer? Thanks....

This is why I wouldnt tow a long distance in the 90deg+ heat in Florida, my haul would be made in <70 deg temps. I'm sure GM also refused to warranty this vehicle while towing because they knew parts would break if an idiot Ty/Sy owner decided to race a stang from a stoplight while towing. You and I both know some moron would attempt this and mostly likely they would cause tranny damage, etc. Warranties are also setup for the lowest common denominator too(stupid owners)

i think it would be alright to tow an open trailer with a bike. Wes a local guy here has towed a big ass boat with a ty and on several occasions has posted the pictures of it. the odds are that your tranny is going to blow up no matter what you do, tow or not.

Is this Ty dropped at all or stock ride height?

Its not droppped at all. Towing a long time now with no problems at all.

Another picture of the boat before I sold the 454 Chevy cause the Typhoon was pulling it just as good.

You might want to post a photo or two of the rest of your "powertrain"... The truck isn't exactly bone stock. :-?

The sticker says "ENGINE & transmission", so it's implying that towing on a bone stock combo might not be a great idea, but I'm sure that if one modifies the truck with the intent to tow they'll be fine...

And like Nick said before, our 700R4s are crappy to begin with. You can put around like a granny all day and blow up your sprag. Happened to me.

You have to remember that GM already had enough warranty problems with the Sy before the Ty came out.

I'd say the limiting factor would be tongue weight. SyTy's just don't have a lot of suspension travel before you hit the bumpstops. That problem is easily solved.
The trans shifts harder than std Jimmy. Big deal as long as you limit the torque to what is needed to accelerate as you would NORMALLY with a NA 4.3 Jimmy.

The only other part that isn't std Jimmy fare is the T case. Now ask yourself ...What is more strain? Launching on a sticky track with 5-600 ft. lb of torque or towing a few thousand lbs. that is rolling on ball bearings???
SyTy's can easily lay down serious torque on a launch and I know of no failures of the T case on most trucks.

As long as the cooling systems are improved to keep the heat away I see no way that towing will induce any more stress than me behind the wheel at a stoplight. Just ask some of the TX crowd how merciless I will launch the Sy. You just have to go easy on the go pedal when you accelerate with a load behind it.

My .02 But my Ty will have a hitch when I get around to it.

My 92' Typhoon came with a hidden hitch installed which was used to tow motorcycles and jet-ski's with no problems. My Father had a 93' Ty and had a hitch installed to tow a small Casita trailer, used it many times before he sold it. :D

Re: Tongue weight

Re: Tongue weight

Tongue weight is something that you can adjust by moving your load forward or back.
Even a boat on a trailer. Put all your gear at the back of the boat.
Tongue weight should be minimal with any trailer, just enough to keep the coupler down on the ball.Perhaps 1-200 lbs would be ideal.
You shouldn't have to beef up rear springs to tow a trailer.
If you have trouble lifting your trailer off the ball, consider modifying the length of the reach to put more weight on you trailer axle and less on the hitch.
You are pulling the weight, you shouldn't be lifting more than a coupla hundred pounds of that
weight on your hitch.
My thoughts
Anyone care to weigh in.

Tongue weight should be about 10% of the trailers weight. If there isn't enough tongue weight the trailer will sway all over the place.

Re: Ty Zero tow rating / I call BS = noob question

I know old thread but...

For those who have towed with the syty, how does the boost look throughout the RPM range when towing during acceleration and cruise? I would think the potential of constant steady boost may overload the components? (turbo, factory intercooler, engine, etc...)

Re: Ty Zero tow rating / I call BS = noob question

The GM technical papers state that the IC is only designed with enough capacity for 15 seconds of WOT at full boost pressure. High boost over longer periods of time will heat soak it and create the potential for detonation. That said, I would be curious what a datalog monitoring IAT, boost, and KR would look like towing with a stock IC, an upgraded upper and lower, and an A2A.

And yes, holy old post Batman!
