Typhoon quit running, scratching my head...

So the typhoon was running good, I parked, had lunch, no issues, came out, fired right up after lunch, put it in reverse, backed out no problems, put it in drive to leave, engine died.... Wont fire off. I had it towed to my house, checked the fuses under the dash, they are good, put one of the spark plug lights on it (the one that hooks into a spark plug and plug wire) no spark when it turns over. I put a new coil I had lying around on it, same thing. Unhook the battery for a few minutes, hook it back up, no joy. Any ideas on this one? I'm about to say screw it and just snatch the engine and use this as an excuse for a complete rebuild, but I'd really like to figure out what the issue is because I'm still waiting on parts for the rebuild stuff, mainly just my FAST XFI box to get back from comp cams and the XFI 2.0 upgrade so I can toss it in. I appreciate any help or ideas guys.

Does the tach flutter? If no replace the ignition module in the distributor

now that's good shit.... tach does not flutter. I figured I'd ask, what all is involved in the ignition module swap out?

Nevermind, I had another distributor lying around, Pulled the ignition module off of it, tossed it on the truck, fired right up...Static, I owe you a beer.

Re: Typhoon quit running, scratching my head...

alright.... scratching my head still. It drove great after I fixed it yesterday (replaced the Ignition control module in distributor with one I had lying around oddly enough) Went out this morning to crank it, same symptoms as before, no tach flutter... Could my other ignition control module have given up the fight? Well, I got another one from the parts store, installed it, and as soon as I went to crank it the tach fluttered for a split second then I heard a pop (like a fuse blowing sound) and the igniton control module gave up the fight I'm guessing. What could be causing these modules to keep blowing like this? I haven't changed anything it just started all of the sudden.

I knew it wasn't fixed. I didn't want to say anything yesterday...

Replace the pick-up coil in the distributor, or swap in the entire loose distributor you have. In my experience (which may not be the same as others', but still extensive) I have never solved these symptoms with a module change out. It has always been the pick-up coil, and has always taken a few 'tries' to solve.

Changing the module is easy, so that's what is always tried first. Changing the pick-up coil is fussy, so it's always tried last.

I'm assuming you have NO MSD ignition components in the ignition system. IF you do, substitute all of those first with stock components.

Re: Typhoon quit running, scratching my head...

I'll stab the other distributor later on and see if I can find another ignition control module to replace the one I snagged from this distributor. Thanks, I'll let you guys know in a few. trying to work on multiple cars at the moment... UPS was nice enough to destroy my hardtop for my little sprite in transit so I'm trying to get the soft top tossed on it also which involves some replacing of parts, etc... nice weather though and at least the beers cold.

Swapped everything out, Fired right up with the other distributor. Now I just need to adjust the timing a little from the swap and hopefully it's all back to normal.

Check the resistance of the pick up coil in the old distributor. Between the green and white wires, disconnected from module. Should be 500-1500 Ohms. Wiggle the wires, and reading should not change. The spec is pretty wide, I typically see ~800 Ohms on a good coil.

I believe there is a dielectric grease that needs to be applied to the bottom (Metal Side) of the ignition module. if you fail to put grease on it the module will get hot and burn itself out rather quickly.

grease applied, How do you properly set the timing? I read unplug s tan wire with black stripe but there are 2 of those going into the ECM. Is there a sticky on it?

Re: Typhoon quit running, scratching my head...

Look under the passenger footwell, up above where your feet would be. There's a single tan wire. That's the correct one. It has a black connector on it.

Mine was hidden just under the edge of carpet, exactly where Quickstop said, but it's very apparent.

Re: Typhoon quit running, scratching my head...

so pull that wire set the engine to TDC at number one and stab the distributor in? I pulled the old distributor and put the new one in exactly the same but I'm turning it to adjust just like the HEI on a SBC... is that the correct way?

Re: Typhoon quit running, scratching my head...

Not sure what you mean by stab....

Set the dist with the rotor pointing at #1 cylinder with #1 at TDC and then start the truck with the wire disconnected.

Once running, set the dist to 0 using a timing light. Tighten the dist clamp bolt and then reconnect the timing wire.

Re: Typhoon quit running, scratching my head...

Basically the same thing I was thinking... Wasn't sure how the wire was supposed to figure into it. I'll grab the timing light and see what I can get done. I'll update in a few minutes.

runs a lot better now. I appreciate the help. I had it about 8 degrees off.
