upgrade compressor and turbine wheel

im seeing where kinugawa has 20g and 25g compressor wheels, was wondering on the potential gain, I was also considering a different turbine wheel, im not really sure what to go with as I am new to turbos,

all I know is changing the compressor wheel should flow more air and potential more boost and the turbine wheel helps control spool up

my current set up is a 3 bar map, intake, 3 inch exhaust, sno pro water meth injection and I will be getting a tuning program with wideband o2 so I can fully tune the motor

my question here Is strictly on the compressor and turbine wheel upgrades..pros and cons

May need a torque converter upgrade. ...I'm others will chime in with their experience.

What wastegate will you be using?

Re: upgrade compressor and turbine wheel

I would try one of these 9 bladed turbine wheels. http://shopping.kinugawaturbo.com/t...sl220g11bladesubarudsmlighter9blades-1-1.aspx

A 25G compressor wheel is too big for a stock compressor housing, unless you get one of there compressor housing that will work. example http://shopping.kinugawaturbo.com/turbocompressorhousing24td0620gtrustsgmc-1.aspx

If,, you are using a stock Sy/Ty turbo, you can use your turbine housing to accept (get it machined) to fit the larger 9 bladed turbine wheel.

This 25G wheel would be a nice upgrade: http://shopping.kinugawaturbo.com/k...rwheel25g65mmholeformitsubishitd05td06-1.aspx

I do not see any cons, to using a 25G wheel & the 9 bladed turbine wheel while using a stock 8 CM turbine housing.

It should spool just as fast as a stocker, but once the engine sees boost,, the boost should come in much faster than a stocker.

Even though I am assuming you are going to use a stock 8 CM turbine housing, which by itself is restrictive, by using the larger & less bladed (9 instead of 12 blades) it should be able to breath a bunch more.:2cents:

You can buy a complete center cartridge from Kinugawa , then you would need to machine your stock 8 cm turbine housing & purchase one of there larger compressor housings.

Not sure of what turbo you are planning on upgrading though, just guessing.

Re: upgrade compressor and turbine wheel

Id like to stick with a stock turbo housing and just replace the wheels if at all possible...I want to drop in the wheels and go with no machine work....im going to use the stock wastegate system but I see where you can tighten the rod tension to increase boost..im curently running 19lbs but at some put boost may increase but cfm does not so im wanting to increase both id like to run 25lbs boost n tune the water meth..my syclone is not a dailey driver put maybe 1k miles on it a year...more of a once a month play toy

I would change to the Forge wastegate & the Sportmachines billet wheel upgrade. Thats next for mine. You wont be dissatified with the Forge. It's awesome.

The problem with having no machining done, you are limited on how much the improvement will be.

The stock size compressor wheel is undersized & upgrading to the same size wheel ,but a better designed billet wheel should help some, not sure it will be efficient @ 25 psi of boost pressure.

On the exhaust side, the turbine wheel is restrictive (too small & the design, ) & so is the turbine housing.

I do not know of any drop in (requires no machining) turbine wheel upgrade, you would be stuck with the stock wheel & it really needs an upgrade in that department.

So, IMO, if you just install a billet stock size compressor wheel, it will not be much of an improvement, the exhaust needs to breath better also to compliment a better flowing compressor wheel. Just my :2cents:.

What Damian said...I have one also...great addition to the Ty!

Re: upgrade compressor and turbine wheel

I got mine rebuilt with Kinugawa's 20G wheel, matching housing, actuator and stocker turbine wheel. Haven't installed it yet. Turbo builder was impressed with the parts. You know how most will clinch their butt cheeks at foreign stuff.

Our 2 cents ....or 5

The stock turbo and be pushed pretty far, as you can see by the stock turbo record and other guys that have pushed them. The work with the stock configuration and have their ideal range and efficiency as does any turbo. The top of the usable psi range being 20-22. In keeping mostly stock components (IC, Torque converter, ecm and tune) the stock turbo can be made to perform much better. In our testing and upgrading, the exhaust housing is just fine with the wheel upgrades that are out there, BMW, 57mm, etc.

If you want more performance, then a bigger turbo will provide that, but at the compromise of other things, ie higher stall TC needed, more efficiency from IC, tune, adjustments in drivability etc etc.

It comes down to what your goals are, what you want the truck to do, and budget. HTH
